Weight lose with the band?
I was just wondering if you have the band and you keep up with your fills and do what your suppost to, will you lose like you want to or will you lose just alittle? I read that someone had lost for 3 or 4 months and had stopped and their doc said that thats all theyll lose. Is this true? Just wondering since Im going to have wls within a few weeks and Im still not sure which wls to have the band or rny. I really want the band, But if Im not going to lose what I need to then I may go with rny. I need to lose atleast 150 lbs, Any help I would appreciate. I have asked the question several times about what wls to have and everyone keeps saying do whats you thinks best for you. Well if I knew what was best for me Id do it. Im just not sure yet. Anyways Thanks all..

Hi Amanda...
Everyone is different, It's my belief that a little more discipline is needed for the lapband, something I have been told by other surgeons as well as band patients. but I have known some folks who were very successful losers. I spent some time in Georgetown, during that time I learned that after care is the main ingredient to being successful with the band. That is true no matter which surgery you chose.
IT's also true that lapband surgery is less risk than RNY..often times in the long run there can be things like vitamin deficiencies, etc. so you have to be pretty up on all the latest information. I find that those who think the surgery failed them are often times (not always) the folks who thought they didn't need post op support. in reality "they" failed not the surgery or the surgeon, although I have to say there are bariatric surgeons who have no business in the industry...If you go to a top notch doc who is up on the latest equipment and surgical skills..(laparscopic) who puts you through the ringer with test after test knowing you are healthy enough for the surgery itself, if they have a really strong after care program with education, covering mental health needs and nutrition..then you will do just fine.
Going to the right center and surgeon is the ticket. ...I am not saying you did not make a good choice as a matter of fact I know nothing about the surgeon you chose..I am only saying do your home work no matter what program you choose.
I don't want to see anyone go into this surgery with the idea in their head this is the easy way out..That is not true. No matter the surgery you will need to make a lifestyle change to get healthy and stay healthy, if you do not make those changes from the day of your surgery..You will end up either with health problems down the road or gaining your weight back. not to scare you, I think everyone should know the facts!!
Good luck
Brenda
Hey Amanda,
With the band, you get out of it what you put into it most of the time. If you get fills when needed, follow the band rules, exercise at least some, then you can easily lose 150 lbs. It may take awhile, but it's very possible. I had my band surgery almost 2 years ago. I have lost 98 lbs and am finally normal. I lost most of my weight in the first year. Have been working on the last 10-15 lbs and finally lost those.
