Topic: RE: not so good psych eval
I'm sorry that this is happening. I understand the psych's point, as well as your and your husband's frustration. Perhaps you should contact your surgeon right away and let him/her know that you feel you DO have the support and that you feel you have it in you to heal, not only physically but emotionally. Having said that, if you have unresolved issues from your past, I would encourage you to seek out a counselor or therapist. Your surgeon would be pleased to see that you are taking that step to healing, and it just might make a big difference in his/her ultimate decision.
Keep your chin up.
Blessings,
Mary

Topic: not so good psych eval
I had the interview part of my psych eval Friday. I've never sugar-coated or tried to hide stuff that's happened to me, so I went through it all with the psych--plus, she had my file in her hand and could go right back and look stuff up, so what's the point of lying lol...
When we got done, she said she was going to write up her report and recommend that I NOT get the surgery because I don't "have enough healing energy left to recover from the surgery". She said I have so much stress from my past and in my daily life now that she's afraid that having the surgery would be too much and I'd struggle to recover from it. She said that the surgeon may decide to go ahead and do it anyway, but that was going to be her recommendation.
My husband is VERY upset right now--he feels like she is saying he wouldn't help me enough around here. He already does most of the laundry and vacuuming and dishes, so I wouldn't exactly be stranded with no help.
Pretty bummed right now.... I was hoping I would be near the end of this wait and finally get to have a consult with the surgeons after the psych eval was done, etc., but now I'm not holding my breath for a phone call.

I also am going to Via Christi program; have been unhappy with how long it takes to get surgery date. I finally have one it is Auguts 12 and I am so happy and scared at the same time. I would also be interested in another support group who knows I might attend both. Dr Lancaster is doing my surgery.
Topic: Great resource for pre-/post-ops
Dear OH Friends,
All of you have been so helpful. Every day I write down something new. I've ordered books recommended and purchased new products to try out...all to help me prepare for WLS.
I would like to recommend my therapist's CDs. His name is Dean Hall, and he has come up with two CDs that are especially helpful for WLS people, both pre- and post-op.
One CD is called Psalms for Surgery. It's for anyone facing any type of surgery. The music is beautiful, and the verses from Psalms are all about comfort and healing. Dean's voice is very relaxing. I just love it, and I'm using it to prepare for my own WLS.
The second CD I recommend is The START Approach. START stands for "Strategies to Achieve Recovery & Transformation" and is geared particularly to those who are planning to have or have had WLS.
If you're interested in these wonderful resources, check out Dean's web site at www.curtisdeanhall.com. You can read all about Dean there. If you click on the Products bullet, you can read about Psalms for Surgery and The START Approach CDs, and you can hear a short sound bite from each track on each CD.
I truly believe that these CDs will bring help, comfort, and healing to you in each stage of your weight loss journey. From what I've experienced, just as a pre-op patient, I'd pay 10 times the cost of these CDs.
Thanks for taking the time to read this post. How I appreciate each of you!
Blessings,
Mary

Topic: RE: Would like feedback re: others' experiences
My surgery was done at Tallgrass. The whole staff have been wonderful. From the moment I walked in there I have felt very comfortable and welcome. They have answered all my questions and never seemed impatient when I needed to ask more. Dr. Brenstein was my Dr. I really liked her. We talked about both kinds of surgery and she felt for me I had made the correct decision. I also talked to my home Dr. and he was very helpful.
It is a scary decision, I know but I haven't regretted spending the money . I was self pay and so far it has been good. I sometimes think I don't have enough restriction but my dr. said i should be able to eat pretty normally. Not chock or anything. I do feel ful faster. I can eat things I shouldn't but I feel so confidant when I do that I will get right back on the good eating. That is such a good feeling. I have never been able to do that . I have just gained wt. even more.
Feel free to ask away any other questions you have.

What was the surgeon & staff like? Were they compassionate, good bedside manner, etc.? Did they answer your questions completely before & after surgery? Also, was the surgery done at the Tallgrass Surgical Center or at St. Francis Hospital?

My Step-daughter is considering using Dr. Bollman and the Flint Hill Surgery Clinic. If you have used him or know someone who has used him, please post your comments or email me.
Topic: RE: Wanting to have WLS
According to my surgeon, there is no way to predict how well a person's skin will bounce back after WLS. He has seen patients lose much weight and have great tone, and he's seen other patients lose less weight and have terribly sagging skin. He says exercise has little to do with it.
Have you researched the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy? The results are very promising, altho' it is relatively new.
Blessings,
Mary
