I love Tall Grass! My experience there has been wonderful. I had the Lap Band and it went very smoothly.

I am considering going, but I have a couple questions. What kind of topics do you cover? Do you have to introduce yourself if you are new (I'm picturing it kind of like an AA meeting, "Hi, I'm Jamie and I'm a.....)? Do you have to sign up?

Any general information you could give me would be wonderful!

Hello everyone! My name is Jamie and I was banded on June 23rd by Tall Grass.  I have had 2 fills so far, so I have a little over 2 cc's. I am 28 years old and have a 23 month old daughter.

Everything is going great so far. I am down 26 lbs since I was banded. I would like to say that the band has helped get me there, but so far I'm not feeling any restriction. I know that's normal, so I am working on the other aspects of weightloss. I am trying to eat better, smaller portions, and excercise. I would love to get to know others who are going through the same thing that I am.

My husband will be getting a job with Cessna in Wichita and I am hoping someone can give us info on which insurance policy we should pick. If anyone has insurance through Cessna please let me know if any of the policies cover WLS. Thank you.

I'm not familiar with Dr. Bollman, but at Tallgrass in Topeka they have been using a round figure of 13K as a banded self-pay number.

Best wishes on your journey.

Topic: RE: not losing weight
I received the following from a question I posed on the main board as I, too, have not lost a pound in two weeks and I am 6 weeks post-op.

This explanation is courtesy of Diana Cox:

Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet.

As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a sabertooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

Does anyone know the cost of the self pay option for Lap Band surgery with Dr. Bollman's office?  Thanks!
