Topic: Anyone in Overland Park?
Hi everyone!
My name is Micah and my family and I recently moved to Overland Park for my husband's job. About two weeks after we moved, I had to begin my pre-op diet and then come back to Kentucky, where we just moved from, to have my WLS. I just had my surgery on 11/18 and now that I'm going to be going back home to Kansas around Christmas, I was curious to know if there were any people in my area that had recently had WLS or if anyone knew of any support groups in Overland Park.
My surgeon is in Kentucky and suggested to me that finding a support group to go to would be a good idea. I think so too! I'd also just like to make some new friends there - I enjoy being social and experiencing whatever life throws at me! So...if you are in the Overland Park area and have any input or just want to say hi, that would be great!!
Thanks
~Micah

Topic: RE: Need Some Friends
I am from Wichita and my surgery done with Dr. Villanueva as well. I have friends but none who understand what I go through as a WLS patient. I have even lost a few or they have become distant as I have lost weight. I am 30 years old have three kids 19 yo stepson, 11 yo son, and 10 yo daughter. My husband is military and currently deployed he is 40 yo and we have been together for 13 years. If you are still looking for friends in the area feel free to find me on FB at www.facebook.com//gotrootgirl It would be nice to have a friend who understands WLS.

Topic: RE: has anyone been to Dr. Alvarez?
Just saw your post Heather ... I am from Kansas but live in Tennessee ... I am getting sleeved with Dr. Alvarez on Sept. 23rd. I have several friends I have known since grade school. They live in Oklahoma and I learned of their experience and LOVE of Dr. Alvarez ... Husband and wife, daughter and three of the daughter's friends have gone to him for VSG. I would be happy to answer any questions for you! .. Annie

Topic: RE: Hi...looking for support and advice
I went to my 1st weight loss surgery seminar thinking that what I wanted was the Lap-Band. I learned of the ObesityHelp website from one of the papers that I picked up at that seminar at St. Francis in Topeka. After reading for a long time on the message boards here, especially on the message board about the duodenal switch, I decided that I wanted a DS. I am one year out and love my DS. (Although, lots of people one year out are still in the honeymoon period. I recommend you read the different message boards specific to the different surgery types and see how people like their surgery after multiple years post-op.) Anyways, the Tallgrass/St. Francis weight loss surgery program in Topeka offers patients the adjustable gastric band (whether Lap-Band or Realize brand), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and the duodenal switch.

Hello. No need for fear. I don't have any info on Dr in Salina. The first thing you need to figure out is how to pay for surgery. Most Kansas insurance won't pay. The first thing to do is call your insurance and find out. I can't recomend the Lap Band. It fails people more than it helps. Medicare no longer pays for the Lap Band because the benefits don't justify the risks. I had Ru-en-Y and I have no regrets at all. I've lost 170lbs and kept 150lbs off for the last almost 5 years now. I'm sure there are people here who will disagree. My advice is research. Study all of the options, talk to a doctor and make the choice that's right for you. You'll find plenty of support here.
