Topic: RE: No hope Kansas?
Unfortunately, in the state of Kansas there are virtually no insurance companies that cover this surgery. The only option is if the company you work for is head quartered out of state. And unfortunately, medicaid excludes this surgery right now too.
I urge you to contact your local kansas legislator to speak about this injustice. I have a thread talking about this issue.
Good luck! I am on the same mission!

Topic: Mini Bypass?
I was just curious if anyone here has had the mini bypass surgery? I was also curious if anyone here is from a part of Kansas other than the Kansas City, Topeka, Wichita area...lol. I use to live in Gardner KS now I live in Garden City KS and it is a battle here trying to find a way to have the surgery. I was just hoping that someone in here was from SW Kansas or just Western Kansas and could relate:-o I would appreciate anyone from my area who has had the mini bypass surgery or any WLS or who is contemplating having either. I just hate feeling like I'm the only one out here:-p I am so jealous of those big city folk who are able to get the surgery and especially those in KCKS area who are able to find health insurances who will pay for it. I am just stuck and frustrated as ever out here. Thanks all and I am so glad for all the great advice and sharing from all the people from this entire site. Julie Fine 260lbs, 28yrs old, 5'3.
Topic: No hope Kansas?
I dont have insurance but was trying to find insurance here in SW Kansas and none of them cover any weight loss anything. Is there nothing we can do here in KS? I wonder how hard it is to get medicaid and if they even pay for such a thing. I already have student loans out the wazzoo so it looks like I may have to take out an enormous loan if I want this surgery. I was wondering if any one here has any ideas for me. Thanks a bunch:) 260lbs, 28yrs old, 5'3

Topic: New Center of Excellence in Kansas!!!
Shawnee Mission Medical Center was approved as of 1/24/07 as a center of excellence. That will allow medicare patients to have bariatric surgery in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The only question is wheather a surgeon associated with SMMC will perform surgery. I attended a seminar from Dr Hoehn and Dr Hitch**** and they were sort of reluctant to do medicare patients if SMMC were to become a COE due to the reimbursments from medicare. Its all about the money!

Topic: RE: Anyone with Coventry Insurance?
I would suggest you call your insurance company personally and ask specifically if they cover WLS surgery. If they do, then ask them what Bariatric doctor is in your netowrk. I went online to my insurance's website and found a few doctors then confirmed with my insurance that they were in my network.
Good Luck and let us know what happens!!
Topic: RE: Anyone with Coventry Insurance?
I have coventry as well and am curious on how to get started. I have done a consult with dr. already and since he is not contracted with Coventry, Coventry will not give his office and address to send the pre-auth to, to even get a denial. Where do I go from here?
Topic: RE: BCBS Kansas City
I just got my approval from BCBS January 30, 2007. LapBand 43770
My card says BCBS of Kansas City, but all the plan benefits are administered in South Carolina (the actually building you reach when calling the number on my card)
The doc faxed all documentation on Friday 01/26/2007, and they called her on Tuesday the 30th with the verbal. I can look on my member website and clearly see the approval status and even the authorization number!
Now, I'm just waiting for the date
Topic: RE: Shopping around
I just heard about a place in Topeka KS that does it for a great self pay price....
I actually called them to find out more info (my mom will have to go self pay)
Here is their link:

edited: I just called them and talked to a person named Jill at the Surgery Center.
Over the phone she quoted me:
Facility: $7800.00
Physician: $3300.00
Anesthesia: $ 825.00
Fills: $FREE
________
$11,925 (Still better than those local in KC)
When I questioned her about insurance and preop blood work she transfered me up to the business office and they were at lunch so I didn't leave a message.
