I'm going to see Dr Tayiem on Monday for my first surgical consult. I've read some good reviews on him & the hospital but nothing recently. Can anyone add to his reviews from last year? Becca Holton, KS

Becca, I would advise you to find a different doctor to do your surgery. Ask any medical staff (especially nurses) and they'll say that they wouldn't let Tayiem do surgery on their DOG!!!!! I'm not trying to discourage you, but there are doctors that know how to do the surgery right, and Dr. AK Tayiem is not one of them. I work at a hospital in Leavenworth and I have heard from the ER nurse that several of his patients come in with post-op complications. Also, if you look at this website, there are a couple of people who had him performs surgery that wasn't so successful. If your insurance has approved you, I think that you should contact Dr. Khadi Udobi at KUMC (913)588-6299. He is a wonderful surgeon, and he has performed hundreds of these surgeries. Once again, I'm not trying to discourage you, but you should really reconsider Dr. Tayiem. And I have more stories, but I won't get into all that, I'll just say that he's notorious around the hospitals here in town as being a terrible surgeon. Good luck

Hi Becca, I don't personally know anything about Dr. Tayiem. . . but there are a couple of Doctors in Topeka that are excellant!! Dr. Berntsen and Dr. Steward are located at the Tallgrass Surgical Center on Wanamaker Rd - just North of the interstate. I have SEVERAL friends that had Dr. Steward, and I just had surgery 2 weeks ago with Dr. Berntsen . . . we have all doing great!! I was told that I was somewhere in the 400s - as far as number of surgeries performed. They have only lost 2 patients to date and each of those were in excess of 700 lbs. each - which means they were VERY risky to start with. Their group offers both RNY - Gastric Bypass and Lap Band. They just happen to be holding a seminar this Saturday at St. Francis Hosp in Topeka. Please email back if you are interested and want more information. Jerri Carbondale, KS

Thank you for your concern. I'd gone to see Dr Tayiem becasue Tricare had temporary brain fart and had stopped approving Lap RNY procedures. They have since reversed that decision and I've gone back to having my surgery at St Francis with the Tallgrass Surgical group. Dr Dunschee (spell ???), one of Drs Stewart & Bernsten's associates, will be doing my surgery on 09 March!!!! I'm so excited. I start my pre-surgical liquid high protien- low carbo diet soon. Congratulations!! They are a great group of doctors. .. Dr. Dunschee assisted on my surgery .. they tag-team, so one of the other docs always assists. The 10 day liquid diet isn't that bad - you just need to make sure and watch the sugar . . .they told me . . low sugar, high protein, 800 cal. I had the most trouble trying to get enough calories . . . but, as long as I stayed with high protein, I wasn't really hungry . . . and, I lost 10 lbs BEFORE surgery!! Good Luck, Jerri Carbondale, KS
