I am two weeks post-op and am having problems getting my protein in. I have had protein shakes and have vomited them up. My insides ache as if I have have been throwing up more than just the three times over the past three days. At this point, what can I eat to get my protein in. I would like to avoid the protein shakes as they make me nauseated. Does anyone have any advice for me? I am feeling pretty rotten right now.

I don't know if I could be of any help but just a few ideas might be some eggs, cooked and scrambled very tiny. Can you find a tasteless protein powder and put it in your food? I know they make them. I was lucky as I don't remember getting in a lot of protein, it seems I lived on mashed potatoes and pudding, or soup for awhile. I know it is very important though and I hope I helped in some way. cat

Hang in there Jennifer, it's gets easier every day! Very early on, like you, I also could not stomach the protein shakes. My doctor told me not to drink them if they bothered me, and not to worry about the protein for at least the first 30 days - he said our bodies store protein and it is not that critical for the first few weeks...more important is getting in your water! I gladly gave up the shakes and had no adverse reactions. I slowly built up the protein on scrambled eggs, sometimes adding a little grated cheese, cottage cheese, and deli turkey were all easy for me. Also, Taco Bell refried beans went down easy. Don't push yourself too hard. I started the protein drinks back up at around 4 months out, only for a quick on the go breakfast. I know everyone says it, but it truly does get easier and easier every day...just get through the first month and you will feel great! Cherie

Welcome to the losing side hon.. okay now, first thing you need to do is to call your doctor and ask this question of him.. I am assuming you have Dr. Steward in Topeka... or if you prefer you can e-mail Brenda and she will get the answer for you.. I am now 9 months out and remember those days ... protein is important and yet, the drinks are nice but right now, not the first priority.. change brands and see if that works (I use Pro-Complex brand and love it) I purchase at Supplemental Giant in Wichita by 21st and North Rock Road.... fantastic.. put two scoops in 8 ounces of Crystal lite orange pineapple.. oh so yummy.. I still eat the lo-fat cottage cheese for breakfast and do so enjoy the carb control yogurt cups and the "Hood Carb Countdown" yogurt smoothies from the Super Wal-Mart.. delicious and full of protein... anyway, just some suggestions for you.. Good luck to you and feel free to contact me ANYTIME... Take care and happy journey to you. Hugs, Fran

Jennifer, Protein is important but not what you need to concentrate on so much at this point. Work on rest and just getting yourself to feel better before you concentrate on the protein. I can not and will not even attempt the shakes. You are too early post op to have to deal with the vomitting issue. Your insides are way too fresh to have that added strain on them. Just eat what protein you can and when you are feeling up to par, add more. Good Luck, Melissa (1 year post op)

I can give you my protein drink recipe and I swear it takes just like chocolate milk. I use one packet of sugar free instant carnation chocolate breakfast (4 g of protein), 1 cup of hood low carb milk, (12g protein) and one scoop of unjury unflavored protein (20 g protein). It has a total of 36 g protein and tastes just like chocolate milk I swear. You can also leave out the carnation instant breakfast. Use chocolate unjury protein powder and the milk and it still tastes like chocolate milk but would have 32 g of protein. Best of luck!
