Psych Eval Question for Tallgrass Patients
I had my eval today...and was just wondering if anyone else who has gone through Tallgrass in Topeka, KS could tell me what their psych eval consisted of. Part way through the eval I started wondering if this man was pulling my leg and giving me unnecessary tests, which I will probably have to pay for at least part of them out of pocket. He said Tallgrass sent him a list and we had to do all this. I was in his office almost 5 hours. Seemed a bit overkill. Had a verbal "interview", which he was clearly bored doing. Then he took me to another room and ran a bunch of stupid tests on my memory. Which was crazy since I have the memory of an elephant. And ran a bunch of cognitive tests, which were way too simple and seemed ridiculous. Then there were 3 written tests. Consisting of anywhere from 215 questions to 567. I expected one of those, the MMPI 2.
It all seemed like a bit much. And pretty ridiculous to be honest. Anyone else had a 4 1/2 - 5 hour psych eval?

Thank you...I don't feel quite as weirded out now...lol.
I wish mine had been broken down into multiple appointments vs. all in one sitting. Boy that wasn't fun. I didn't think my hand was going to work right for awhile after all that. LOL. And of course I slept lousy the night before, so was so afraid I wasn't going to be alert enough. But, I think I did ok.

Seems like alot to me...I would call Brenda or at Tallgrass and ask them if this was their requirement. They are great there and it will be worth it!!

I went to Edmond, OK for my surgery and we were required to see the pychologist but it seems to me that we did a test on the computer which took me about 20 or 30 minutes and then I met with him to review the results and he asked me some general "How do your rate this and that in your life" questions and then he okayed me for surgery. I think it probably took and hour or hour and a half to complete.
Good luck with your surgery. You won't regret it.

I haven't had my psych eval yet- it's scheduled for the 30th- but I am a psychologist. Some of my colleagues do bariatric evals. The eval should consist of an interview and, mostly likely, an MMPI-2. The questions the eval should answer are, "Is this person capable of making good decisions about their own healthcare, does this person understand the risks and consequences of the surgery, and is this person emotionally stable enough to handle this long difficult process." I have never heard of memory or cognitive testing for a bariatric eval. I think you are right to question the appropriateness of the tests given. You might consider visiting with this evaluator's supervisor or contact the behavioral sciences regulatory board.
I also went to Tallgrass. I think it depends on who you go to for the eval. Some put you through more than others. Mine took about an hour. We did an interview for about a half hour then it did the 700 or more questions on the computer. He got the printout immediately and told me I wasn't nuts. LOL and that he would send the report to Tallgrass.

Have you had your surgery done yet? Any perspective, pointers, suggestions about the whole experience?'
