Has anyone gone through the insurance approval process only to be told that you must go on a 6 month supervised diet 1st? And... has anyone by past this?  ie.. Found the insurance company and not have to do this? Geesshh,, like, we all have already spent our life savings on diets....

Deborah,

What insurance do you have? The 6 month diet is fairly standard, however some AETNA plans have a 3 month multi-disciplinary plan you can do instead. It is stricter, but faster!

It is pretty standard that they all are asking for a 6 mo dr. supervised diet now.... some will accept documentation like if you have been going to weigh****chers or some place like that recently.  This is a long process which I know stinks it took me a year to get through all their hoops they expect you to go through to get approved.  Good luck and don't give up cause it will all be worth it....

Well too bad your hubby, working for USPS, doesn't have Fed BCBS. I turned all my old WW documentation and was approved from that. Hang in there...it WILL be worth it!!!

Deborah, I know 6 months seems like a long time, but it will go faster than you think. I want to assure you that it will be worth the wait. This surgery option is just fantastic. You have to be very thankful that as a Kansan that you even have the option. Many are dying each year because BC of Kansas has set total excusions against WLS and have failed to treat it like the disease that it is. When you look at the 1000's of Kansans on the outside looking in, you have a lot to be thankful for. It is in your future....so cheer up...crack a smile and be happy. You are actually fortunate to be among the lucky ones.... John

I had to do a 3 month diet and exercise plan but I knew that before starting the process.  Seems kind of silly since you're needing WLS.  I was told they want to see that you have the determination to stick with a plan.  I didn't have to lose any weight but I lose a few pounds. Your doctor should have know what your insurance required. I know it seems like an eternity but the time passes more quickly than you think.  I did South Beach. Good luck!! Jo

I did try the approval process and was told the same thing even though I had been on Jenny Craig and worked with a personal trainer twice a week in 2007. Because these events were not doctor supervised, I was told I needed to do a supervised diet for 6 months. I opted to self pay and go to Mexico to have the procedure done. I saved several thousand dollars and am very pleased so far!!

My insurance won't pay so I am financing mine and my daughter's surgeries.  It is very expensive but I decided it is well worth it to give both of us better health.  Hang in there.  If you can get it paid then the wait will be worth it.   Kim
