First of all, I really think it depends on how far out you are regarding any surgery you have had for weight loss.   You also have to look at what you have been instructed by your physician and nut.   Where I come from with RNY we are not to drink 30 minutes prior to meals and 30 minutes after meals, those are the instructions.  HOWEVER, in our support group we have talked about this and even the nut. stated that drinking prior to meals after being several months out would be ok, but not to drink with meals or 30 minutes after meals.    The reason for that is this.... when you drink, it will fill you up and then you are more then likely not to eat as much protein as you should.  Also, drinking can push your meal through faster then not drinking.    Alot of people who have had RNY have stated that they will drink slowly up till meal time but then not during or after the meal.   Which makes more sense to me.    Sometimes I drink after my meal prior to the 30 minutes and it does one of two things.   It either goes down with no trouble or I feel like I did something wrong and I get a little neausa because I was fuller then I thought.   I have not really had a problem with it pushing my food through but I am not like all other people.  I have issues with my food going through faster then it should all the time, no matter what I eat.   It does seem to be getting better but I do have days and weeks where I eat and then I am in the bathroom.   I am not sure what type of surgery you had but if you did not have RNY then check on the main board or go to the ds board if you had the d. switch done.   I am not sure what the instructions are for that surgery.   To always be on the safe side, check with your doctor or nut.  Kimberly

my dr. said, no water 30 min. before and 1 hr. after.  That way I can eat what I need and it will then stay longer in the stomach without getting washed down.  Let me feel full longer.

Yep.. It's Ok to drink with your meals if you have a DS.. I am currently having a turkey bacon ranch sandwich from Mr Goodcents and a large ice tea. With the DS I still have my pyloric valve and drinking with my meals will not wash out the food in my stomach. Now... in the early days of post-op, I was not able tto do this because there was no room for drinks and food. But now that I am 16 months out, I have no problem drinking with my meals.

Hubba Thank you so much for your replies.  In fact I am now looking into ds because of your suggestion and I think it's the surgery for me.  I love food although I don't have to eat large quanties.  I like the idea of being able to eat more than with gastric bypass and reducing the changes made to my digestive system.    I can't imagine not drinking with my meal so I am really happy to hear about that.  Thank you for the advice.  Charlene

PLEASE research DS VERY WELL before just jumping on it. Hubba isn't giving you everything there is that you need to know. Being able to eat larger quantities is an advantage of DS. But you will also have side effects from the procedure. Bypassing most of a persons small bowel has its problems.
* Frequent soft bowel movements (up to 4-6 per day)
* Frequent passing of foul-smelling gas
* Changes in body odor
* Gas pains or bloating
* Hair loss
* Intolerance of certain foods (varies from person to person)
Also things like malnutrition that can be a problem with RNY are even more so with the DS. Yes the pylorus remains intact and this usually prevents dumping but not always. A major portion of the stomach is permanently removed, which makes the procedure completely irreversible.
I'm not saying the DS is bad or that Hubba is wrong. The DS might be right for you I don't know. I'm saying know what you're getting into. Research and learn. Then decide.

I agree.. research all surgery types and choose the one that you can live with. That being said, The reasons listed above are not reasons to not have a DS * Frequent soft bowel movements (up to 4-6 per day)- I go twice a day * Frequent passing of foul-smelling gas- I passed foul smelling gas befor I had the DS. Having the DS didn't make it smell any worse or better...**** Stinks! * Changes in body odor-Yep its from ketosis. A side effect of rapid weight loss.  Happens with the RNY too. Also my wife says my body oder is much better now than when I weighed 450 lbs.. I'll take that change * Gas pains or bloating- Depends on what I eat. High carb and simple sugars will cause extra gas but it's easilly controlled. * Hair loss- Happens with RNY too.. BTW.. I didn't lose any hair after surgery. Hair loss  does not happen to everyone. * Intolerance of certain foods (varies from person to person)-I'm not sure about this one.. I havn't found anything I can't eat. I was eating solid food befor I left the hospital. There are some who do have problems with meats shortly after surgery but seem to get over it in a few months. Your right, malnutrition is a problem with both surgeries supplementation is absolutely neccessary for both surgeries. The part of the stomach that is removed is the part that contains "grelin" the hunger hormone. That part cannot be reversed but the malabsorbtion part can be.

I didn't say any of those were reasons to not have DS. I said that they were potential side effects. They are. Just because these side effects are minimal and not bothersome in your case doesn't doesn't mean they don't happen. They are still there, common and must be considered. I didn't tell anyone to have or not to have any procedure. I recommended research.
You chose to have DS as your weight loss solution. It seems to have worked out very well for you. I chose to have RNY. It has worked out quite well for me. That means we both made good decisions for ourselves. I have no regrets. I would do it again in a heart beat. It would seem that you feel the same.
