Question for anyone who has had gastric bypass

I have a question for anyone who has an answer. I had gastric bypass on September 29 about a week and a half ago. I have had no problems until yesterday. I have not eaten anything I wasn't suppose to but I feel like I could throw up. Nothing really hurts just uncomfortable. It seems to go away a little bit but then I take a drink of water or my protein and it feels a little worse. I don't know what this is, does anyone have any ideas. I was doing so good and then this. I know it could be worse but it's very annoying. I've been eating with my baby spoon and sticking to taking 30 minutes to eat my 2oz. Thanks for any advice.

Call your surgeon.  You could possibly have a stricture.  I haven't had one, but others on here have.  You may need to have a endoscopy.

It sounds very much like a stricture, they are very common in the first three weeks following surgery.  Luckily they are an easy fix, call your surgeon.

Holly,

There are several things that can make you feel nauseated. A stricture is one. A stricture is a closing up of the stoma (where your new pouch is now connected to your intestines) and is caused by scar tissue. Other things that come to mind are dehydration (yes, not drinking enough water can make you nauseated when you do drink water), not chewing food well enough (VERY common early out), and a lactose intollerence. With the lactose, you could have drank and enjoyed milk all your life and at some point post-op all of a sudden get nauseated from it. That happened to me. For me, it only lasted a few months, for other people, it lasts quite longer.

If you haven't been throwing up at all, I would recommend recording how much water you are getting in and try to reach the level they recommended for you post-op. I would also try to switch to a non-lactose protein to see if that would help. You can find some at several health shops (like GNC). If you are vomitting though and you know for sure that you chewed up your food well, then yes, call your surgeon ASAP. The longer you put off calling them, the greater the risk of dehydration you are at.

Best of luck!

Congrats!

You might would get some benefit out of reading through my profile. I have a section in there just for new post-ops. I've been told that it had helped some to read it...and to know that what they are experiencing that first few weeks is normal...and gets better.

If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to post it here. We may say 'call your surgeon' but usually we can give a pretty good idea of what to expect when.
