Diabetic and Fruit
Okay, I have a question for any and everyone, I am a diabetic and have been for about 13 years now, I was put on an insulin pump on May 15, 2008 (just before my WLS) was taking 2.65 units an hour now I am down to .3 units an hour , I so want this pump off.
The reason I am writing is because I would really like to have some fruit, but not sure which would be the best for me does anyone have what fruits would be the best, I have lost about 65 lbs still have a ways to go, but I will get there. But I just don't know what fruits (if any) that I could eat that wouldn't make my blood sugar go out of control and make me have to up my insulin intake. Any ideas???
Susan,
Your docs & nuts would be the best ones to guide you. What I would do though (other than dropping my family doc & nut an email) is that I would check on a nutritional site such as SparkPeople.com or Fitday.com and see how many calories & grams of sugar (even though it's a natural sugar) is in a serving of the different fruits that I like. For my own taste buds, watermelon is a good choice. Banana's, although loaded with good stuff like Potasium also has alot of sugars (for a fruit that is). So does cherries. Looking at those stats should be able to help you figure out what you'd like to try...and how much.

Susan,
I hope it won't be long and you will be off your pump. Many diabetics have had such good luck with bariatric surgery. A couple other websites you may wants to check out are thedailyplate.com, nutrition.gov, calorieking.com, dietfacts.com, and nutritiondata.com.
Sherry, thank you for the reminder that the cherries that I LOVE dearly have sugar in them. Those darn things don't have a label on them, LOL I know that if I eat too many that I get diarrhea. The same with Banana's and I don't even have to eat too many of those. Its good to know that my tool is still working for me but I sure don't want to be pushing my limits too much.
Thanks for being here for me OH'ers. I'm glad you have my back.
