I have my surgery on Aug 11th.  I go do my pre op testing on Monday and then I go take a pre op class on Tuesday.  A lot of other people are or are getting ready for their liquid diet my doctor is Selzer at Clarion do you know when or if I will go on this?   Also totally off the subject but what is a stricture and why do people have revisions?  Sorry I STILL have alot of questions so thank-you in advance!!

I can't help you as far as Dr. Selzer's program. I'd advise you to call his office and ask his nurse.

A stricture..when seen on here with post-ops...is when the connection between the intestine and the pouch (called the stoma) gets smaller than it should and food/liquid can't pass through. This is normally caused by scar tissue and is easily resolved with 1-2 endoscopes. Occaionally, a person may require more endoscopes (aka 'endo', 'scope') to resolve the issue but rest assure, the surgeons do know how to take care of this.

A revision may be need for a vast number of reasons. I don't think I have heard of two people needing one for the same set of cir****tances actually. Just know that it isn't a common-place thing and that should you need one, again, your surgeon is very capable of helping you through this hurdle as well.

You are welcome to view my profile if you'd like. It may help answer some other questions that you may have. Feel free to 'contact' me if you have any questions about what you do read in my profile.

My surgery was 4 years ago and I did not have to go on a liquid diet except for the day before surgery It was soft foods 2 days before then liquids then NPO then surgery....

Every Dr is different and depending on your labs and physical exam.. and depending on the Dr you may or may not have to go liquid.. it isnt a bad idea though from what I have seen because it does shrink your liver making it safer for surgery and gives you an idea what you are in store for the first 4-6 weeks after surgery,

Be well be safe and by all means follow DR orders FIRST!! Support groups are to help support you to follow the DR's orders which sometimes... seems rough..

I had my surgery 3 months ago thru Clarian and my co-worker just had hers done yesterday and we both had to do a 48 hr clear liquid diet preop, they give you those instructions the day of your preop class.  Hope this helps!

Sittalee,
I had Dr. Mattar @ Clarian. He requires 2 day liquid diet. I went 3 just incase I couldn't get through the first day. ( I did no problem)
I am thinking Dr. Selzer will prolly follw Dr. Mattar's ideas. Dr.Selzers some times sees Dr. Mattar's Patients when he is out of town. I have seen him before.

I had Dr. Mattar and my co-worker had Dr. Ditslear but everyone that goes through Clarian goes on the same 2 day preop diet (i did 3 as well), they go over the liquid diet instructions during your preop class with everyone.  And yes, Dr. Selzer follows alot of Dr. Mattar's same principles.

Good morning,

Your question about a revision being normal is not something I can answer.  Sherri sums it up real well.

I had a revision on 7/10/9 because I fell of the bench.  I slipped into some bad depression about a year and half ago.  I found that I could tolerate sugars and everything else.  I allowed myself to slip back into my old eating habits and bfore I knew it I gained 40-50 lbs back of the 130 I lost.  I started seeng this affect my health and that was a eye opener.  My new years resolution was to get back on the losing bench.  I started back to working out, and trying to eat the right foods.  To no avail I lost nothing for the first 5 months, from 6/1/9 to 7/10/9 I lost 12 lbs on myown.  I was at a support group in 02/09 and a friend of mine said something about a revision.  I never thought about it until Brandi said something, the more I though about the more I wanted to see if I could get it done.  I set up an appt with Dr. Huse and he schedule and upper GI which showed that my pouch was twice the size they like for it ot be, and due to me being a diabetic we sent the inforamtion off to my insurance company and I was approved for the 2nd surgery.  So I started my 2nd rebirth on 7/10/9.

I am not proud that I fell off the losing bench, but I am human.  I know where I made my MISTAKES the first time.  I do not even want to test the waters this time, and if I see myself slipping back into the depression I will take different steps to handle it.  I will not turn away from the people on OH.  They are a wonderful source of support and friendship.  I have meet many from here I could call any time day or night and they would be there by my side.

Revision was something that was right for me.

I have losted 10 pounds in a week ad half.

Big Hugs

Peggy,

I have found that each time my abdomon is operated on that my taste buds and food tollerances have to be relearned. That said, assume that you WILL dump now and avoid sugar like the plague. Since you were a diabetic and know you have a propensity toward it, also beware of carbs. I was borderline diabetic pre-RNY and within a year I became hypoglycemic...which can also be dangerous. I keep it under control mainly by watching the carbs I choose.

My revision was at 6 months post-op and was due to perforations with my stoma when they corrected my strictures. I just have screwed up innerds, what can I say?

Congrats many, many times over for your revision. I just KNOW you are going to stay with it this time. If you don't...well..we'll just have to form a possee to come and get you back on the wagon!
