I have my first consulation today at St. Vincent's.  I am leaning towards the DS....  will they try to talk me out of it?  Do I get to choose the surgery or do they make the recommendation?  Just don't know what to expect today......hopefully this means I am only 6 months away from my surgery!

If you're leaning towards the DS, hopefully your consultation is with Dr. Inman. Unless something has changed, I thought she was the only surgeon there that did the DS.

I went in with an open mind. I talked with her about my eating issues at the individual consultation after the orientation. She recommended the RNY for me. So I went with that. I got the impression that they want the choice to be a collaboration between the patient and surgeon as to what would be the best option for you.

In my experience, they are supportive of what you think you need, as long they feel it's a safe option. I believe Dr. Inman is the only surgeon currently doing the DS. Best of luck with your consultation and keep us posted!

Had my orientation and met with Dr. Evanson.  I decided to go with the RNY for different reasons.  I really liked him...seemed really laid back and very knowledgeable.

My insurance requires 3 months of proof that I have tried to loose weight....does that means three months prior to surgery or 3 months out of the last year..or what exactly does that mean.  I was in a weight loss challenge from March - May...it was a 12 week contest, in which we had weekly weigh-ins, nutritional classes, excersise classes and individual workouts in the gym.  If I could get documentation that I atteneded that do you think that would count?  Or do I need to start another 3 month program with a doctor?

You really need to talk to your insurance and find out heir exact requirements. My bet is that they want 3 months of physician monitored weight loss attempts. Call your insurance.
