what do you take for constipation?
Sometimes when my high-protein diet gets the better of me, I get a little constipated. I take a mild stool softener. They sell them OTC from most drug stores. The kind I take occasionally is CVS brand, with the active ingredient Docusate Sodium, 100mg. It works, just right. Not too much, if you know what I mean.
I know increasing the fiber in your diet helps too. Sometimes I will eat a small bowl of all-bran in the evening or eat a couple of prunes before going to bed. I love prunes so, I keep a container of them in the fridge and eat a couple in the mornings and evenings. I do have problems now that I am post-op WLS where I never used to have any at all. I guess it is the protien. I tried colace and never noticed much difference plus I didn't want to take it all the time like the package said so, I started eating my prunes. It's also like a little snack and if I eat them before I go to bed thats my evening snack. I crave at night and still wake up sometimes in the middle of the night hungry. That use to be my bad eating times so I still struggle some.
I hope things come out ok... LOL sorry for the pun!

Jeanna,
I had tried the colace (tablet, not capsule) and when I was up to 4 a day, I knew I had to do something different. I tried the Fiber One cereal. One cup is 28 g of fiber..and my nut recommended 30 g of fiber per day so I'd eat a cup of it in the evenings..dry...like you do popcorn. When the didn't help, I'd drink a cup of Smooth Move Tea (Meijer's) or Dieter's Tea (Super WalMart) before going to bed and the next morning, I'd be A-OK.
When I had my gallbladder out, I went through about 2 months of being constipated..and then it was about 6 months of diarhea so bad that I had no control over it. I ended up having to take a leave at work because of it. Imodium didn't do alot of good. I tried taking calcium & iron pills during the day and that did help significantly. Unfortunately, they didn't help with the current issue I've been having, but did with it when it was post gb. My taste buds changed alot then too. I could not stand to watch anyone eat toast/rolls/ect with unmelted butter on it. That was pre-WLS for me but I might as well have been trying to choke down a tablespoon of pure lard for the way it made me gag. The nurse at my gb doc's office told me that after she had hers out, she couldn't stand the sight of pizza for about a year. So...don't be surprised if it doesn't affect not only your 'taste' buds but how well you handle the sight of certain foods as well.
