Hello everyone, Just a quick couple of questions.  How does someone know if they are lactose intolarant, or if soem thing else is going on.  I am 7 months out and this last week I have really felt blah.  I am not sure what is going on, but after today I dont think I am lactose intolarant, I have been able to drink milk since surgery, and that is how I have always made my protein icecream, but this last week whenver I really eat anything, about an hour later I am sicker then who knows what, and I get that feeling that I am going to throw up, I never actually do but my mouth starts to watering, and I get the foamies, and then I feel blah for several hours.  I ate lunch today at 11:30 had chicken broth with some some chicken breast all went well until about 12:30 then I started my thing, and felt terrible it passed about 2 so I ate my protein ice cream and about 3:00 I was so sick I thought I was going to have to leave work, here it is 6:15 and I still feel awful.  Being 7 months out I would not think it would be a stricture do any of you think  it would be?  Any ideas what it could be.  I will call Dr. Inmans nurse tomorrow but thought maybe someone had an idea before then.

Andrea,

It sounds like you're having problems with non-dairy foods too (chicken/chicken broth). Is that right? If so, that would pretty much make me believe it isn't lactose intollerance.

Strictures...they can happen at any time. I was ~2 months post-op when I had my first one. Floyd was about 3 years post-op when he had his only one. So at 7 months? Yes, it can be a stricture. The best thing you could do is keep a journal of what you ate/drank and at what times...and what time the discomfort starts/ends and describe it. After a few days, contact your surgeon's nurse and relay this information to them. They will talk with the surgeon and let you know what the surgeon wants to do. The may want to do an endoscopy to go in and look around. If you have a stricture, it will be dilated back open while they are in there. With endoscopies, you are given a nice little ****tail via IV that makes you unaware of what is going on. They insert a tube down your throat (but you don't remember or care) that has a camera at the end so they can see your pouch. Getting stuck for the IV is always the worse of the whole process for me.

In the meantime....be sure you chew the heck out of your food. Try softer foods (ie cottage cheese) and see if it gives you any problems. If you do get meat stuck, sometimes drinking a mixture of a teaspoon or so of meat tenderizer dissolved in some warm water will help to break the piece up.

Good luck....

Sounds like my experience with my stricture. Things weren't moving through and so I'd feel like I wanted to throw up, (sometimes I did) but once it moved through I felt better. I'd call your surgeon.
