I'm having my surgery tomorrow morning and it seems that I'm hearing alot about food not staying down after eating. I would like to know what to expect as I've not heard alot about this. Is this an everyday occurrence or does it just happen once in awhile....MIKE

Mike,

You have to eat VERY, VERY slow and chew, chew, chew..or it will be a common experience. Sometimes, if you have stricture issues, you'll also not be able to keep your food down until they do an endoscope to open the stoma back up. I was told that about 20% of post-ops go through this. Occasionaly, you'll run accross someone who has had major issues with this (like me) but the docs know how to get through them also.

BTW..from my experience, it's not the same experience at all as pre-op vomiting. The food isn't digested and you don't usually feel sick. now that I have my stricture issues taken care of, I may still have an issue 1-2 a month is something has a tough skin where I didn't get it chewed up well enough. Cherry tomatoes aren't good for me.

In all honest i  knew after i ate chicken yesterday that i didnt chew as well as io should have .
So i knew i was in trouble.
But i had my surgery 15 mths ago and have not had any issues as Sherri says small bites chew and eat slow.
I wish you luck tomorrow and i would do my surgery all over again it has saved my life so a couple of times of getting sick is not bad.

Dont worry too much.  Everyone is so different.  I have only thrown up about 6 times in my first 11 months.  Most of the time it was emotionally related more than food related.  My pouch is very sensitive to stress.

That being said, I had issues when I didnt chew my food well enough and when I drank too soon after eating.  I found that my pouch hates carrots.  I cant eat them no matter how they are prepared.  I used to love them before surgery.

Your pouch will let you know your limits.  Just really pay attention to what you consume and make your food diary early out.  It will help you see a pattern if you have an grouchy pouch.

Best wishes for your surgery!!!  Make sure you take your measurements!  It will really help boost you when your scale numbers dont seem to change at times!

Huge hugs,
Tracy

As Sherri said, eat SLOWLY. I tiny bite at a time. You have to retrain your mind when eating. We are used to taking a bite, chewing and swallowing our food. After WLS you have to be careful of swallowing too much or too quickly before chewing your food to a pulp because if you get air in then you will feel like you swallowed a marble. You must remember slow, slow and chew, chew. I only dumped a few times but, it was enough to make me never want to throw up again. You will feel like you are very sick. Heart palpatations and sweating and pain in your chest. It's all part of it and it helps you stay focused too.
I hadn't come to this website before having my WLS so it was all new to me at first. Having advice  here helps so very much.
Good Luck and congrats on your surgery tomorrow.
You will do great!!
Be Well  : )

For me learning to chew slowly and thoroughly came as a hard lesson.  During my third and fourth month's after surgery it was common place for me to be sick daily.  Its not like you probably imagine though  ...small stomach = small food = small puke (for lack of better terms).  Since learning how to chew chew and chew some more or use my food processor to "chew" for me I rarely get sick.  You will learn the rules of the pouch and be just fine.

What time is your surgery? My dght is having RNY by Dr. Evanston tomorrow at noon. Best of luck to you. I had Rny on April 25 and haven't had any trouble having food come back up. Wendy

follow the advice of the other posters - chew, chew, chew, and small, small bites.  I am almost 8 months out and have not vomited a single time.  That is one of my goals, along with my weight loss, it to get through this without "ralphing".

Good Luck and I am sure you will do great!

If I lived on the moon, I would only weigh 24.4 pounds.
