When you guys get up does it go black then slowly the world comes back.

I have been dealing with this since surgery. Is it a Vitamin that needs uping. I have an appointment with Dr Inman in June but would like to start fixing it now. It is really bothersome today. The blackness isn't going away quickly enough for me. So have any of you experienced it and what are you doing to get rid of it.

 Thanks

Robin,

I take it that you mean you are close to passing out...? My head gets that swimming, lights-out feeling now & then too. When I had the visiting nurse last year, she said it was because my blood pressure can get pretty low. Now, I just stand up slower and that seems to help most of the time. Occasionally (like this past weekend), I'll manage to get to the kitchen and have to hang on to the counter for a few minutes. I've never discussed this with my pcp..I guess since I've never actually passed out. If it gets much worse, I will though. I would suggest you contacting your pcp.

I know dehydration can cause you to get light-headed too. I don't know if a vitamin shortage can or not. Anyway, I'd still loop your pcp in on it and see what they have to say.

Robin,
I get this too. I have literally hang on to the wall to keep from going down sometimes.  I can be at the store and bend down to pick something off the shelf and stand up and have the same experience.
I have talked to my drs about this. They are stumped??? Shocked, I know.
They are having me keep a  blood pressure diary and a blood sugar diary now though.  My blood pressures run low now... like 88/50.   My fasting blood sugars now run 78-85.
So I would love to know what causes this too.
Blessings to you all, Leah

I got up once and was so dizzy, I tried to hold on to the wall, but I ended up falling  to the floor. I was told it's called orthostatis hypotension. You just have to rise slowly. I don't know if they can do anything else about it.

I have this happen to me sometimes too.  Although mine isn't always just when I get up.  Sometimes it happens while I'm standing at the stove cooking or something like that.  I haven't mentioned it to my doctor, but I'm curious to know if you figure out what causes yours!

I posted about this very thing a couple months ago.  I had passed out cold at my son's music class and fell in the store.  My surgeon  suggested to eat when this happens, it doens't have to be big meals, something as small as half an apple or part of a protein shake.  I can now feel these episodes coming on and know how to stop them.  Hope you are able to get to the bottom of it because I know it stinks.

Melissa,

I would bet that when it happens while you are just standing (like at the stove) you will find that you have locked your knees.  This will cause you to pass out if you keep them locked (I've seen it happen at band competitions).  Next time you find yourself starting to feel like this while just standing relax your knees and take a few deep breaths.  Start mentally checking whether or not your knees are locked.

Otherwise, I agree with everyone else, it is probably the sudden change in blood pressure.  If any of you are still on blood pressure meds, see your doc about reducing or removing them.  My blood pressure ran very low for about a year after my surgery, but no one thought to take me off of my meds until about 3 weeks post op!  I could barely make it down the hall to the bathroom!

Thanks for the advice Cindy!  I'll have to try to be more aware and notice if I've got my knees locked or not.  I don't think they were, but they may have been and I just didn't notice.

I called the surgeon about 2 weeks after my surgery and told them I was taking myself off my blood pressure medication because mine was low too.

Thanks again!!

I have this pretty regularly still. Sometimes if I can get to my blood sugar monitor right afterwards it's my sugar being low. I was told that it was probably my blood pressure the other times. The doc recommended sitting or standing up slower instead of jumping right up. I have had issues when standing too also though. It could be your iron though, I'm pretty anemic and I was told that was part of my dizzy spells.

This happens to me all the time.  In my case, it is the aftermath of a bad ear infection a couple of years ago which turned into labyrinthitis.  I have really bad vertigo.  The room spins whenever I change the position of my head.  Even laying my head down on my pillow at night causes the room to spin as if I had drunk an entire fifth of Tequila!  (don't ask me how I know what happens when you drink an entire fifth of Tequila.....)
