Upset with Dr. E's office!!!!

I called this morning and left a message for Dr. E's nurse, Melinda.  She called me back and was very rude.  I told her about finding out I was pg and I needed to know what to do now.  She basically said that they could do nothing and I needed to contact the dietician and my ob.  I told her I already contacted my ob and they wanted my medial records from the surgery and anything else that would be of use.  Melinda said that she had never faxed to an ob office before and they didn't need my records.
So, then I asked her if it is common to accidently get pg before the 12-18 mos and again she was rude and said NO, that's why we tell you to wait.  I asked if I needed to do labs, she said we normally do those at a year...why would we do them now.   Arrgghhh!!!

Guess they already have my $$ why do they care... I'm done recommending his office though.

Oh I'm sorry you are dealing with that. I dealt with similar reactions while I was sick and on the TPN. Hang in there, get your records and have a healthy pregnancy. I'm sure the dieticians will be able to keep you both healthy through this.

I've never had any problems at all with Dr. E's office or with Melinda, his nurse.

I do agree that your best source of assistance right now is with the dieticians.  They can guide you best through this with the help of your OB.  I would think it would be up to your OB to do labs if they want to check to see your levels in light of your pregnancy.  Dr. E's office obviously won't be handling your OB care, so they wouldn't need your labs done now.

I can see though where an OB that isn't familiar with bariatrics would want your records, especially since the baby's development could be affected by our malabsorption issues.

All that being said, congrats on the new little one!  They're such joys.  When are you due?

Dani,  Congrats on you new surprise!  I hope you get it all figured out with your OB and they can get things right with the dietian.  I think its very understandable that these things happen.  I know you are not the first person to ever go thru this.  I cant believe the insensitivity of some of the people working on the doctors staffs.  Yours is not the only one.  I feel fortunate that I have had nothing but good experiences with Dr. Gupta and her entire staff.

I will pray for you and the new little one.  Stay after the OB and staff to get your answers and get your records.  You have every right to your records.  They are, afterall, YOUR medical records.  Don't back down and dont take any crap from them.  It's about your health and the health of this precious little gift God has given you.  So make it a priority!

Huge hugs to you and congrats to your family!

Congratulations on your pregnancy, I hope you're feeling well and not too pukey!

Please do not take this the wrong way, this is not a personal attack ... but ... everyone is told they should do everything to avoid pregnancy for at least one year after surgery, and that they are going to be more fertile as they lose weight.  There is not a lot of medical information out there about how to properly care for women who become pregnant so soon after surgery, and Dr. Evanson or any other surgeon will likely not know how to advise you right now.

I agree that there's no reason for Dr. E's assistant to be rude to you.  But I doubt his office will be able to help you, even if they wanted to.  Also, be prepared for the fact that your OB will likely not know much about your specific nutritional needs, either.  There just is not that much info out there to guide them.  The nutritionists should be helpful, and will probably recommend you keep up with your normal vitamins but be extra sure to get enough folic acid, iron and B12 since we need more in pregnancy.

Your OB has standard labs that they run at the prenatal visits, perhaps you can ask them to also check your folic acid and B12 levels?  Or to be extra-careful, ask Dr. E's office to fax to your OB the labs they usually order at 12 months, and your OB can do them at your prenatal visit.

Good luck, and at least know that your weight loss will help you be much healthier in this pregnancy!!

I have a friend who was in your same situation.  Her dietician was the biggest help and will probably be yours too.  She gave birth to a healthy girl and then 2 years later had twin girls.  The babies were all healthy and she did fine too.  You will probably be advised to increase your protein to 80-100 grams and increase your calorie intake as well.   You can do this by eating an additional meal or two throughout the day or adding a protein shake.
Call your dietician and set an appointment ASAP.

Congratulations!
