Very unpleasant!

I had a terrible episode of gas pain last night, I think I drank a hot protien drink too fast, it started about 1 1/2 hours after I drank it.  I had the worst tummy pain that then turned into tummy and chest pain  I seriously was bent over on my sofa praying to God to give me a sign "is it my heart? or is it my tummy?"  considering a trip to the ER when I got up and immediately I burped!  That was my answer.  I spent the next hour and half trying to walk, but was sweaty and shakey, burping and farting and in the worse pain I have had since I had a gall bladder attack.  It went on for about 1 1/2 hours then it stopped, I was exhausted and went to bed!  It was the most unpleasant experience I have ever had!

I dont want it to happen again that is for sure, drinking that protien drink too fast is the only thing I can think that might have started it.  Do you have any advice??

Thanks Dawn

Been there, done that!! Not very fun. Poor girl... I had to laugh about the walking around burping and farting because I can relate but, you just put it out there and it made me giggle. I can actually feel the gas rumble through my stomach now like when its pushing through my intestines. I've never ever felt it like this before (per-op) but, now I can a lot of times feel the food move from my pouch and through my intestines. It is like internal farting! LOL
Glad your feeling better today Dawn. Just know that a lot of those things are normal and when you come here and post, people can share what they have gone through. I love this place.

Did you by chance mix your protein with milk?

It almost sounds to me like you might be a lil sensative to milk products.  I was immediately following surgery and your symptoms sound  a whole lot like what I went through.  It went away after about three or four months.  You may want to take note of how you feel following milk products.

No milk, I mixed it with water.  I really do think I drank it too fast, I was determined to get my protien in yesterday and it tasted gross.  I will take your advice on the milk, I was never much of a milk drinker anyway.  Thanks Dawn

I don't have any advice since I have not experienced it yet, but I am grateful to have posts like this on here, so I can be aware of potential problems and try to nip them in the bud before they happen.

I will remember this for when im post op.

A couple of things come to mind.

First of all, How much protein was in the drink total?  As a rule for me, and this is MY experience, I can't handle taking in more than 20 grams of protein at one time.  I get horrible gas pains and it just is too much all at once.  So I have to keep mine limited it and break it down into small amounts.  I don't know if anyone else ever has noticed it or not.

Secondly,  GAS-X Strips are my friend!  Early out, I got gas-x strips and I still use them when I need quick relief of gas pain and even nausea sometimes.  They dissolve on your tongue so you dont have to add anything else to your pouch when it is upset or full.

This is exactly why they tell us not to start protein until you can pass gas.  Can you imagine how you would feel if you couldn't burp or fart?!!!!   Ouch!

But seriously.... the drinking too fast thing will get ya too!  Be careful and sip sip sip slowly!!!

Huge hugs,
Tracy

Welcome to the world of WLS!!!!  Isn't it fun?  Let me tell you that this will unlikely be the last "fit" you have.  You will eat something too dry, too fast, too sweet, too...something.  Sometimes you will eat something that you normally have no problem with....and it will make you sick.  Not usually as sick as you were the other evening.

It's good that you realize you drank it too fast.  Boy,that was a learning experience, eh?  I remember the first time I ate something that my pouch was not happy about.....holy cow.  I was trying not to vomit b/c I was early out and all I could do was wait....I laid on my bed and cursed myself for letting them mess with my tummy.  Like most things, this too shall pass (no pun).  As your pouch matures you will find that it likes you a lot more.  You will also learn what works for YOU.  Hang in there!
