I'm finally eating again but in very small amts. Because I'm eating little tiny bits at a time, I find myself feeling hungry more often. Just wondering, if you want a snack, what do you eat? Tonight I ate a few slices of cucumber, but have to admit that veggies were not what I was wanting. It was all I really had in the house.

Also, I have really begun to love the taste of salad, but get tired of the same old stuff on it. What are your favorite salad ingredients?

In the prepackaged salad section, there is some stuff called "broccoli slaw".  It is actually to make a certain kind of slaw I guess, it is sliced up broccoli stalks and carrots.  Anyway, I add it to salads.  It is very krispy and adds a unique flavor without adding too many extra calories.

Includes 10 lb pre-op loss.

Personally my favs are chicken or tuna salad..

Chicken with grapes and celery and walnuts in it.

In a lettace salad I like tomatoes, chedder cheese, cucumbers bell peppers, I also ad sometimes dried cranberriesd or mandarian orances instead of the tomatoes..

If I want a snack, I get something that has some protein to it.  Lately, my snack has been a slice of 97% fat free ham, cut in half (so I get two!), rolled up, and dipped in spicy brown mustard, or rolled up around a sugar free sweet pickle spear.  A protein based snack makes me feel full longer.

Salads - yum.  Lettuce, cucumber, sliced roma tomatoes, diced hard boiled egg, diced ham, some craisins - whatever else I may have on hand to toss in it, with fat free Poppy Seed dressing.  Love me some salad!  After all the time on soft stuff, there's something about the crunch of lettuce!

Glad to hear that you're eating again!

I may be reading something that in no way is here, but it almost sounds like you want something sweet.  I have sugar free pudding or jello.  I also have sugar free candy.  You have to watch the sugar grams with the candy.  I find one piece of candy is less than 5 grams of sugar.  So I eat one piece.  It works for me.

Melissa,

Since you are eating very small amounts, you may want to make those in-between snacks as high in protein as you can. I would suggest cheese sticks or shrimp.

Because of your ulcer,  I'd back off of tomatoes or mandrian oranges (or juices)...or anything with any citric acid in it..at least until you get an all clear from your ulcer. If you have shrimp, avoid ****tail sauce with it...and avoid any ketchup or other acidic condiments. You'll need to be extra diligent to avoid caffiene too for awhile...unfortunately, that even includes sugar-free chocolate.

I know. You asked for ideas of what you can have, and I gave you a list of what to avoid. After 2 ulcers, I learned to behave myself very carefully in order to get rid of them..and not have any more.

Oh..my favorite addition for salads is something naturally sweet... raisens.

Sherri, with your ulcers, did they put you on medications? I have been on Protonix twice daily for months and other than when I first got sick have not missed doses. We questioned if I was absorbing the medication since I still developed an ulcer. What are your thoughts on this?

Melissa,

I was put on two different ones. Carafate I think was one...it's a liquid. It seems like I took it 4 times a day and I had to try to time it like an hour before I ate or something like that. I just remember it was tricky trying to time it with my synthroid, my vitamins, and my meals...and still get my liquids in. The second was a chewable Prevacid (sp?..something like that). I know some people anymore are put on something right after they are post-op even if they have no indications of an ulcer..as a prevenative. I wasn't. Maybe that is why my ulcers were more receptive to the meds.

I got one ulcer from 1/2 cup of coffee. The other, was from ketchup. I think ketchup was ok at 3 months so I had some shortly after that. Ouch. I waited until 6 months for my next try with it. That was my lesson in that the allowable list is a guideline only. Some people, have to wait longer. I did for anything citric.

Are the protonix pills? They may not be disolving and coating the ulcer.
