I have been told that not all Dr's require you do a liver reduction diet.  My surgeon requires that you do it from the time of your initial consult all the way until a few days before surgery.

It is basically a SUPER low carb diet (if you have done atkins, thnk induction) and also low fat.  It is done in order to reduce the size of your liver to make surgery less complicated.

Hope that helps!

My doctor did not instruct me to go on the liver reduction diet.  I thought it was for people having laproscopic WLS.  I could be wrong.

Maybe a seasoned WLS patient can confirm.

Hi there! Most surgeons want you to severely restrict your carbs for a few days before surgery in order to reduce the size of your liver. Most of us who are overweight have fatty livers, which of course makes them larger. They have to lift the liver out of the way in order to perform the surgery, which is why they like them to be smaller. Even if your surgeon did not instruct you to do so, which surprises me, go ahead and reduce the amount of carbs you eat before you have surgery. It certainly won't hurt anything.

Best of luck!

I didn't have to do a liver reduction diet either.  A lot of the St. V docs don't require it.  I only had to follow a special diet the day before surgery.

The Liver reduction diet is a Clarian Bariatrics Program. They usually put you on it as soon as you start to go through the WLS Process. It is to shrink your liver before surgery but also to start you on eating the right way because after surgery you will be eating a form of it but no so strict. Dr. Mattar doesn't have you do a bowel prep or anything like that because you have been on the LRD and liquids for 2 days before surgery, so No Yucky bowel Prep. I was in and out of surgery in a snap because my liver was so teennyy tinnyy. LOL Hope that helps. I would strongly recommend before surgery to try a version of it and no carb it because I COULDN'T EVEN Imagine trying to de-carb or de-carb/de-soda after surgery! THAT WOULD REALLY SUCK! BIG TIME! I went back to work full time in 9 days!
