Top Foods that you struggled w/ giving up or were surprised you had to give up???
Because I had the Duodenal Switch instead of the RNY, I didn't have to give up all that much. I did give up white flour products because they can wreak havoc by making me gassy, but other than that, I haven't had to give up a lot. I do have to get my protein in first (about 120 grams a day), but after that, I can have pretty much what I want. I drink diet coke (vanilla coke zero is YUM!), I eat popcorn with lots and LOTS of butter, I still eat cookies, cake, doughnuts, ice cream, just not in the large quantities I used to before having WLS.
Your question is one of the reasons why I chose the DS over RNY when it was time for my revision surgery. I know how I am; I could never diet before, so why did I think I'd be a successful dieter after? I knew I needed to pick a surgery that would work with my lifestyle, not against it. I can still eat all the foods I loved before surgery, but again, in moderation since my stomach size is so small. And now the foods that I loved and made me fat before are actually HEALTHY for me now! I have lost 154 lbs, my cholesterol is 156, my blood pressure is completely normal, my HBA1c is on the low side of normal and I feel great!
Since you haven't had surgery yet, have you had a chance to look into the DS? Dr. Inman is the only surgeon in Indiana who performs it, but I think Dr. Evanson may start as he has assisted her with several DS surgeries lately.
Good luck with whichever surgery you choose. BTW, if you would like to know more about the DS, please visit the DS forum here on OH.

I was also one of those people that could never stick to a diet before, and yes it did scare me to wonder how in the world I would be successful this time when I never was before. But I would like to think that I am a positive role model for other pre-op and post-op's out there that have VBGB and RNY that YES

Do it For You!
Anyone that knows anything about my life knows that it has been full of all kinds of abuse, negativity, health problems that nearly took my life, & a very traumatizing divorce. I could never stick to a diet before, I could never be positive about anything, I never was treated with respect, and had several health problems.
I mention these things only because I have been able to overcome not only my morbid obesity but I've also been able to turn all the other negative experiences of my life around into something positive. (Those were all reasons I overate). Now I have a very positive attitude, I'm treated with respect, I have confidence, a determined don't quit attitude, and I'm not about to give any of them up and go back to the life I use to have.

I don't understand your statement that the foods that you loved and made you fat before are actually HEALTHY for you now! I don't claim to have all the answers, I am far from perfect, but the things I once ate that made me fat are not heathy for me to eat today. Popcorn with lots and lots of butter, cookies, cake, doughnuts, ice cream......this is not healthy eating. This is not healthy fuel for your body, for your heart, or for your arteries. I apologize if I am misunderstanding what you are saying but this is just my opinion.

It is amazing that you can write this...
"And now the foods that I loved and made me fat before are actually HEALTHY for me now! "
There is no way any food that made you FAT will ever be HEALTHY for you no matter what surgery you had. Please!!!
I seriously don't understand the people that had DS, and why they post stuff like this... to misinform the newbies or those that are here for info. on choosing a type of surgery that is right for them.

Yes, it IS amazing that I can write that because it's TRUE! Obviously you and the other responder to my post know NOTHING about the DS. Yes, the food that made me fat is now HEALTHY for me. WHY? Because my realigned intestines malabsorb 80% of the fat that I eat. That means my body uses only 20% of the fat (and our bodies need so much fat to be healthy) and 80% of the fat exits my body via the toilet. Whatever my body DOES NOT absorb DOES NOT cause high blood pressure, does not raise my cholesterol, etc. AGAIN, our bodies need so much fat to be healthy, and to achieve that healthy level we DSers have to eat a higher fat diet than others.
NO, we DSers most certainly DO NOT misinform newbies or pre-ops. If anything we want pre-ops to know about ALL surgery choices so they CAN choose the right surgery for them. DSers, as a whole, are usually more knowledgeable about our innards and plumbing than those who have had other surgeries because we had to research, research and research some more, and many, myself included, had to fight our insurance companies tooth and nail to have insurance pay for the DS, which means even more research and studies and statistics we had to wade through. The DS has better stats as far as losing weight and keep the weight off in the long run than ANY OTHER WLS out there. The DS is the closest thing to a cure for diabetes there is. The DS allows us to eat as close to normal as possible without feeling deprived. As I stated before, yes I can still eat the foods that I love but within MODERATION and most definitely NOT in the quantities I did pre-op. So how is this spreading misinformation, I'd like to know. I'm sorry if you did not do the research and do not know about the DS, but don't spout YOUR ignorance about DS here on the boards for others to see.
Dr. Inman is a wonderful surgeon and she is the only surgeon in Indiana to do the DS. We Hoosiers are so lucky to have her when there are people on the DS board every day who are having to travel across state lines (and even out of country!) to even find a surgeon who performs the DS. I feel it is my duty to let everyone know about this wonderful surgery so they can make up their own minds. Don't like it? Don't know what to tell you. But the myth that you have to suffer, give up food, punish yourself, etc to be thin and healthy is just that... a myth. I beat up myself enough when I was fat and miserable, I certainly didn't want a surgery that would continue that cycle of abuse for me.

I'm sorry, but if I eat like an RNYer I get constipated and that's the bottom line. When your body automatically turns everything into low-fat then what do you do? I personally want to be able to go to the bathroom, and not sit here all day in agony because I am eating a low far diet which my body is turning it to even lower fat. It doesn't make sense.
While it is true that "any food that made me fat" is never going to be healthy to me, such as cake and donuts. I will say that I have lost my weight just fine from eating cheeseburgers and grilled cheese sandwiches
. And I am not sending the wrong message to any pre-ops by any means. We still have to watch our diets as well. DSers do the Sugar Free thing during the weight loss phase. I haven't had any ample amount of sugar touch my mouth for four months, and I plan on keeping it that way. We also have to watch our carb intake, because this will lead to weight gain. I have gotten anywhere between 15-60 carbs in a day since I had surgery.
And I seriously don't understand why RNYers put DSers in a huge group together and believe that we all do the same thing and misinform newbies. Personally I don't see how Lyndia's post was mis-informative at all. She was stating what she had to say, and all of it is true.
And you also said that they are here for info on choosing the right surgery that is for them, um duh? That's exactly why she posted in this topic. The DS appeals to some people, The RNY appeals to some people, as with the lapband and VSG. We are all here for the same reason, and we are all here to fix it. And for you to Deliberately sit here and LIE and say that we are lying about our surgery is complete hogwash. I am sorry if something doesn't make sense to you. Obviously you just don't want to believe the reality of the situation at hand here, I believe you should think otherwise, but hey, to each his own.

For your info I have not had any problems with constipation.
Just curious where did I LIE, I gave my opinion saying that "what made you fat is not going to make you healthy".
And yes I also do enjoy my cheeseburger and no I don't eat all low fat foods. I eat like a normal person, just less and always try to have protein 1st.
But seriously you need to relax...
