I'm home and doing well!
I had my surgery on Tuesday, 2/24/09, and came home on Wednesday. I feel I am doing really good. The gas is a pain (HaHa), but only had pain meds a few times in the hospital and not since I've been home. I do have a tight feeling in my chest today that doesn't seem to want to ease up. Has anyone else experienced this? Also, I'm a little confused on what and how much I should be eating. I had a smoothie made with light vanilla yogurt, skim milk, and fresh fruit for breakfast and I am having 1.5 oz of pured chicken, sf jello for lunch. Is this enough? Also, I got a little concerned because in the hospital they gave me decaf. hot tea with my meals and ice chips. Aren't we suppose to wait 1 hour to drink anything after we at? Thanks for any advice.
I agree with Bev, each place has difference, I know when I had my surgery, I was not allowed to have anything but jello, pudding, cream soups (cream only) cottage cheese. I was not allowed to have fresh fruit, pureed chicken for sometime after. I received information from the Nut. on what stage you can have what food. On the drinking I was told 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after. These are questions that you will need to contact your Nut. or Surgery office to get these answers.
I hope this helps.
I am happy you are doing so well, and welcome home
Have a safe and wonderful day.

Jo Anna,
It sounds like your hospital/surgeon is alot like my sister's was with very little post-op guidance. Here is a link to what the patients who go through Clarian or St. Vincent in Indy are told to do. The Clarian nut told me that this posting of their's is a little bit out of date..but it should serve it's purpose here. If you were told to do differently than this, go by what YOUR surgeon/hospital told you to do. I always think it is best to err on the safe side though.

Congrats..and best wishes. I hope we get to see you more often on here.

Glad to hear you are home & doing well. The pain I had in my chest was from GAS! I used gas-X & it really helped. Wlaking also helps. I am surprised you are on pureed foods & friut so fast. Make sure to contact your Nut. about what you are suppose to eat/how much/etc. I don't want to tell you something that your Dr. or Nut. may have changed.

Wow! That seems quick. I was in the hospital a full 2 nights, 3 days before being let go. But you sound like you are doing great. Sherry is a peach giving you that website. That is the exact guidelines I had as well. Follow those guidelines and you will do great. Do you have a nutricianist? Didn't they give you post-op instructions? My care has been excellant and well monitored. I didn't even want to eat chicken when I was able to. I still have a few issues about chew, chew, chew and swallow only tiny amounts.
