I was just wondering if everyone lost hair?  Do you lose hair even if you are taking in the  right ammount of protein?

I don't know if everyone does.  I know I haven't yet.  I got a haircut yesterday and she told me that my hair was very healthy and none was coming out (I had asked her about it - she must have been familiar with bariatric patients as she reminded me to be sure to take my Biotin, and to come see her if it does start to come out, as she can recommend a shampoo).

By the way, how are you doing surgery sis?  Haven't seen you on here for awhile.  Getting along ok?

Hi Jeanna!!  How the heck are you woman??

I was thinking that I had escaped the whole losing hair episode.  But.... I have not.  I started noticing it about a week ago. Not losing a huge amount but definately losing more than normal. I get my protien in and am a fanatic about taking all my supplements and vitamins.

I am just now 18 weeks out from surgery as of yesterday.  A little over 4 months.  I have heard many different causes... the stress of surgery ( I had 3 surgeries in 9 days last Feb/March and didn't lose hair like this. )  So I am veto-ing that reason.  I am gettiing enough protein and biotin, so that isn't the reason.  My surgeon told me last night at support group that the trauma to the body of losing weight so rapidly is the most likely cause.  That sounds the most reasonable and I need to blame it on something.  I have noticed my hair is more coarse lately as well.  I am blessed with thick hair to begin with so I am hoping it will subside soon.  Especially since I appear to be in a stall.  Grrr.....  I know.. I know.. patience Leah.

Let us know how you are doing Miss Jeanna!! Miss hearing from you!!

Blessings to you all, Leah

Getting enough protein will help, but you can lose hair from the effects of general anesthesia too. From what I read alot of people lose atleast some hair. It grows back. For me, it's still been worth it.

Jeanna,

I've always made sure I got my protein in...and since I was ~5 months post, have taken biotin as well. Prior to having my RNY, I NEVER lost any hair at all post-op. I had my RNY and about 4 months later, it was falling out by the handfulls every time I took a shower. I'd have to clean out the drain 3 times to get through my shower! A few weeks after taking biotin, it slowed down. I have had oh...about 20 surgeries since then. I lose some hair every time now about 4 months after I had the surgery. Since I maintain my protein intake & take biotin, it's not alot of hair now, but still, some. I know how much difference there is between now & when I was losing so much of it so that I'm a strong believer in getting your protein AND taking biotin.
