Pre-Op Protein Question

I am scheduled for surgery on March 24th, I am interested in getting more protein in prior to the surgery.

I need some help, what would be the best source of protein that  will not impact my 45 carbs per meal (I am a new diabetic)?

I am not really sure what a diabetic does after WLS - how can I get in the required carbs?

If anyone has any ideas, please share.

Thanks!

Lisa,

Are you having a RNY?  If so you'll find after surgery in MOST cases it cures the diabetes and you won't have to worry about the carbs.

I think I would call your dietician and ask them to help you with the protein question prior to surgery.

Huggs!

Lisa - Hello
I am a diabetic too - have been for 4 yrs.
You might want to call a dietician - Its free through program
take advantage of it ! I might do the same myself.
I am on a 4mg pill - never insulin.
I am also - curious about protein shakes - which ones are best
& ideals about them.. The education meeting is informative -
But, I thought..I'd ask people who have been through it already- maybe get some positive feed back. I hope you have had a blessed weekend. I have been praying alot - 8 days to go !
You mentioned coming to see me - I would really appreciate

CONGRATS LADIES ON YOUR NEW JOURNEY!!!!!  One of the things I wish I had done pre-op was begin taking a multi vitamin and biotin for my hair, so you might consider starting these.  I love a protein drink called Acheivone but the company has not been cranking them out so fast and you can not find them.  In the mean time I have started drinking Atkins choc or mocha latte flavored shakes.  16 grams protein...1 sugar...160 calories.  Not bad flavor, but a little thick so I pour over ice and add a little skim milk.  You can get a 6 pack for like 7.99 at wally world.  GOOD LUCK.....DEB

Deb,

The manufactures of AchievOne are working on getting in switched to the paper-type cartons (like what kids juicies come in). It's my understanding that they are having a little bit of problems getting the formula to not react with the lining though so it's slowed down the release of it. The last projection I saw was March..but I seriously doubt if it will by then if this issue continues.

Deb - Is biotin in pill form?  Can I just get it at any store?  I really like my hair...did you lose a lot?

I'm not Deb...but...Biotin is a B vitamin. You can get it in just about any pharmacuitical aisle that has vitamins (Walmart, kroger, CVS, Walgreens, Target, etc). I get it in tablet form..it's the only form I've seen. It is safe pre or post-op since it is dissolvable in water. I usually buy the strongest on the shelf. I have had several surgeries so it seems like either my hair is falling out, growing back, or about to have another surgery. I had started off with VERY thick hair..now..not so think but yet, much better than it would had been without the biotin. My biggest complaint is probably that the nuts wait until people complain about hair loss to recommend Biotin instead of being pro-active about it. I would definately recomend any pre-op to start taking them ASAP...and then keep taking them because you never know if you are going to have my luck or not.
