Lost appetite?

So, all during my pre op period, all I heard was that I would lost my appetite completely after my bypass surgery and it would last anywhere from 6-9 months.  I'm 9 days post-op, and I still feel hungry, often.   Is this normal?  I try to busy myself when the feeling comes on, or I drink one of my protein shakes.  I at first thought that it was mental hunger, but my stomach growls, and I have that empty feeling in it.  What's going on?

I had some head hunger early on also and still have major stomach growling going on. I could tell if it was my new pouch growling or my old stomach depending on where the growling was coming from. Over time the growling stopped and I still don't usually feel hungry. My guess is that it is head hunger and your stomach growling has you thinking it's true hunger. I think for a while post op our old stomachs growl because they are empty, but that has passed for me. Hang in there.

Shelly,

Our tummies can be noisy creatures! They'll growl, move, and in general, make their presence known. Mine was like that. It would get so darn noisy and in my head, I'd be thinking 'yuck, food!' but I'd eat  thinking I was missing the signals and that it must be hungry and after 2 bites, feel stuffed to the gills. That still happens at times. Just stick to what you are suppose to do and things will quieten down after a little while...and you will begin to know your pouch a little better.

We do get head hunger...boredom hunger...and habit hunger. Most of the time, we're just thirsty. Let's face it, if we were good at knowing what our bodies REALLY needed, we wouldn't had been overweight to begin with.

congrats on being post-op!

I am there with you!  I posted this same thing after my surgery.  I was hungry for quite a while.  I still have more of an appetite then most people.  My surgeon said "Some people feel like you."  I was a bit peeved.  I KNOW that everyone is different but I wanted to be one of those that couldn't stand food when I got out....uh no.  Instead I was pissed off for a few months thinking WHAT THE HECK!  I also don't have a lot of restriction.  They claim that it is just nerve endings not being healed....blah, blah blah....maybe so but it sucks.

I just stuck to measuring my food.  After a while I got in a routine and now I do struggle sometimes but  not nearly as much.  Good luck!  You are still very early out, too.  In a couple of weeks things could be VERY different.  Keep your head up....it does get better.
