A question about Gatorade

So I took Sheila for her scope today and while she was in recovery the nurse asked her would she like to have a gatorade.  I speak up and say "she is a gastric bypass patient, no gatorade".  The nurse looks at me like stfu and let me do my job.  So I ask how many sugars and her answer was" 21 grams of sugar no more than juice".  Sheila was going to drink it because she said she has in the past.  So I wish I would have just kept my big mouth shut, however it makes me wonder ...Do you drink Gatorade?

Jeannie, I would say NO!!!  That is too much sugar.  All nurses don't know or understand bar sur.  The morning after surgery my hospital nurse brought in a cup full of pills to take and got mad when I refused to take them until they had been spilt (smaller).  Good for you for standing up....you are a good friend.......

I can only have Gatorade on rare occasions and it has to be diluted.  I don't bother.  I don't like Gatorade anyway, especially watery Gatorade.

Hope Sheila's doing ok!

She seemed to be doing fine when I dropped her off.  Glad to have it over, and be able to eat again.  She will be on a liquid diet for two days.

I wouldn't drink gatorade. I was told the sugar in juicy juice is natural sugar which is what makes it ok. Glad you spoke up. I had an ER nurse at Carmel St. V's who offered me a sprite when they wanted me to drink. I kindly refused and asked for water or crystal light. Obviously, a little more education is needed.

Jeannie,

What a good friend you are.  You were right to speak up.  I wouldn't drink Gatorade now.  I'm 7 months out.  I would dump for sure.  I agree some more education is needed.  I hope she describes what happened to her surgeon.  I'm sure they would not like it.

I was always allowed gatorade and powerade... I am 6 months out and it has never bothered me. In fact when my potassium was low I drank as much as I could.

Hi Jeannie,

Hope Sheila is feeling better soon.  As far as the gatorade goes, I would have guessed it would be a big no-no for us pre-ops, however another poster said it hasn't given her a problem.  Who knows?!  I for one am not going to risk it, however even before surgery I always thought it tasted

I would say no too. Seems like way to much sugar to me.  On the label it says the ingrediants are: Water, High Frutose Corn Syrup,........

I recall the golden rule, nothing if it has sugar in the first 4 ingrediants.

Now they do make a Gatorade that is low sugar- Gatorade G2

I drink gatorade on an occasions, but it is normally G2, these are alot lower in sugar.  I was told it was ok to drink in moderation.
