did i hear you go thru a spell where you stop losing any weight at 3 weeks?  if so, how long does that last?  my Dr. expects me to lose at least 5 lbs a week.

Jeanna,

I did...and it lasted a couple of weeks. I considered those times as periods that my body needed some time to catch up. Just continue doing what you are suppose to and the weight WILL come off!

Yes, you'll stop losing at about 3 weeks post-op.  It's normal so that you body can adjust to the recent weight loss.  And you'll have other stalls during the next 18 to 24 months so don't get discouraged.  They all happen for the same reason...you body needs to catch up to what it's going through.  Sometimes the stalls last a couple weeks and sometimes a couple months...all normal.  But I think the expectation of 5 pounds a week is a lot once you're 3 months or more post-op.  Initially you'll lose that or more, but then you're body adjusts and you may only lose 3 to 5 pounds a month.  You need to remember that this is not a quick fix, even with the surgery...it starts out with a bang and then slows to a steady tick, tick, tick.  Just stay positive, eat right and exercise.  You'll do fine.  Good luck!!

I stalled at three weeks, it lasted about ten days or two weeks.  I had researched and knew to expect it but it didn't make it easier.  I think this is part of why the first month is so hard.  You change so much about your life and your habits and seemingly starve yourself then hit a wall, it doesn't seem fair.  However, you must tell youself that its what your body needs.  I measured myself and found that during the time I was not losing weight I lost a ton of inches.  It was during this time that I took the scale out of my house and it is still gone.  No way do I want to be a slave to the scale I have done that my entire life.

If I were required to lose 5 lbs a week I would be in serious trouble.  I am lucky to lose 10 lbs a month, and this last month was only about 8 lbs. I follow my surgeons rules and do what is required of me, its just what my body feels comfortable with so what can I do, I dont like it but I have learned to be ok with it.  I have watched a couple of the peeps here on the Indiana board who had their surgery 2 and 3 months before me already make it to their goal weight and that makes me want to scream sometimes lol. My age, my extensive messed up dieting history and the fact that I am post menopausal all work against me.  I have no doubt I will make it to my goal weight I dont care how long it takes any more.  I can now walk in a room and not be the biggest one there, that is a great feeling! I set small goals for myself, my next one is to lose 12 pounds by Valentines day, that will put me at 100 pounds lost.

Can I ask you how much weight you need to lose?  The less weight you need to lose the slower the weight loss is, you may only lose 10 lbs a month if you only need to lose 100 lbs.  The person sitting next to you may lose 20 lbs a month but needed to lose 200 lbs.  You both are losing 10% of your excess body weight.  If that rate were to continue you both would hit goal at the same time...ten months after surgery.  Its really best if you don't compare weight loss, it will make you miserable.  You will reach your weight loss goal, just do what your surgeon and nutritionst say and you have no alternative but to reach goal.  How long it will take is anyones guess, but you will get there.

Your doctor should know that there are plateaus with this just as there are in the other dieting world.  He may expect you to lose 5 lbs a week at first, but he should also know that won't continue indefinitely.  You'd be the incredible shrinking woman!

We're gonna slow down hon.  It's ok.  As long as we follow the plan, we'll pick back up again.  I gained .4 of a pound yesterday believe it or not, but lost all that this morning plus some.  I figure I'm going to hit a plateau very shortly as my weight loss has been dramatic - I've lost 32.5 pounds.  I know it's going to come to a screeching halt here real shortly, and I may stay the same for a little bit while my body adjusts  Maybe that will help a little with saggy skin too.

As our diet is advancing every 4 weeks, I wonder if the diet advancement will have something to do with the plateaus as our body adjusts to the new foods.  Just a thought.

Hang in there surgery sis!

I really think it has less to do with your diet and more to do with your body needing time to recover.  I have a pattern in my weight loss and you will probably notice one too as you get farther out.  I lose for about five weeks then stop for two or three  weeks.  Last month when I took my measurments I had lost 59 1/2 inces...thats almost 5 feet of fat!!! Take your measurments so you have another tool to use besides the scale.  Just this week I started losing a lil weight after being on a three week stall.  I was stuck between 205 and 208 for three weeks.  Then I went from 205 to 199 in two days so it averages out each month to be around 10 lbs a month.

Thanks for the info Jeannie!  By the way, how is Sheila doing?  She had a scope, right?  How's she getting along?

Sheila is doing well, her and I took our grandkids swimming on Monday.  She has decided to try and make it without the scope for now.
