WAS ALL READY TO GO TO WORK AFTER I ATE A LITTLE MARIE CALANDERS TURKEY DINNER AND TOOK A SHOWER. I WAS GETTING READY TO GO AND FELT ONE OF THEM DAMN SPELLS COMING ON AGAIN! CALLED OFF WORK AND ABOUT PUKED THEN FELL ASLEEP AGAIN. I WAS OUT FOR ABOUT 2 1/2 HOURS AND THEN WOKE UP FOR JUST A LITTLE WHILE, THEN SLEPT MOST OF THE AFTERNOON IN MY CHAIR. I AM SO GLAD THAT IT DIDN'T HAPPEN WHILE I WAS ON THE ROAD LAST NIGHT IN ALL THAT FREEZING RAIN OR WHILE ON THE WAY TO WORK AND ON THE ROAD TODAY. I HOPE THEY DON'T FIRE ME FOR MISSING WORK BECAUSE I NEED THE JOB BADLY. COULD YOU ALL PRAY THAT ON MONDAY OR TUESDAY ONE OF THE DOCTORS I AM TO SEE TELLS ME WHAT IS CAUSING THIS? I AM SO WORRIED THAT THERE IS SOMETHING BAD WRONG. I APPRECIATE ALL THE PRAYERS I CAN GET ON THIS MATTER.

Sounds like dumping to me. There  different forms of dumping syndrome and this is one of them. My first dumping was on turkey. I hope you are feeling better now.

Yorkie I am finding it a little un-believeable that it is dumping. I was at Dr. Jones office during one of these spells and the nurse practioner was unsure of what it was. She spoke with Dr. Jones while I was there and they wanted me to go to the ER. I feel if it was dumping that they surely would have known it. I mean they see tons of people that have had this surgery and they surely would have seen something like this before if it was just dumping. I never have even a loose bowl movement after having one of these spells. I have been on the chatroom that is world wide and no one seems to have experienced anything like this so far. I am to see Dr. Jones herself on Tuesday of next week and will be asking her if this is a form of dumping. I think it sounds more like a low blood sugar thing to me. It happend no matter what I eat also. Thanks for the info I will bring it up at my next appointment! Michelle

You must be right. I am only going by what my Nut said when I experienced it. I still have it happen to me. I hope they figure it out.

See below for what Dumping REALLY is.

Under normal physiologic conditions, the stomach and pylorus (the opening of the stomach into the small intestine) control the rate at which the gastric contents leave the stomach. That is, the stomach, pancreas and liver work together to prepare nutrients (or sugar) before they reach the small intestine for absorption. The stomach serves as a reservoir that releases food downstream only at a controlled rate, avoiding sudden large influxes of sugar. The released food is also mixed with stomach acid, bile, and pancreatic juice to control the chemical makeup of the food that goes downstream and avoid the “dumping syndrome."

Early dumping syndrome happens when the lower end of the small intestine (jejunum) fills too rapidly with undigested food from the stomach. Patients can develop abdominal bloating, pain, vomiting, sweating, rapid heart rate, stomach cramps, fatigue, light headedness or diarrhea.   Since with the RNY Gastric Bypass the majority of the stomach is not being used and a new, small pouch that directly connects to the small intestine is created, there may be dumping. Early dumping syndrome is due to the rapid gastric emptying causing bowel distension plus movement of fluid from the blood to the intestine to dilute the intestinal contents. These symptoms usually occur 30 to 60 minutes after eating.

Late dumping is related to the blood sugar level. The small bowel is very effective in absorbing sugar, so that the rapid absorption of a relatively small amount of sugar can cause the glucose level in the blood to rise rapidly. The pancreas responds to this glucose challenge by increasing the insulin output. Unfortunately, the sugar that started the whole cycle was such a small amount that it does not sustain the increase in blood glucose, which tends to fall back down at about the time the insulin surge starts. These factors combine to produce hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) which causes the individual to feel weak, sleepy and profoundly fatigued.  Essentially, the person crashes from the highs and lows of the blood sugar and absorption factors.  Restricting simple carbohydrates (fruit juice, rice, pasta, potatoes and other sweet tasting foods) and eating more protein can reduce the symptoms of dumping.

There are some RNY post-ops that do not experience dumping syndrome.  However, just because a person does not experience symptoms of dumping syndrome, it still has the remaining impact of blood sugar issues along with eventual weight regain by eating the wrong types of foods.

Michelle,

Have you ever checked your sugar when you feel this coming on? You could be getting hypoglycemic & your sugar bottoming out. It can & will make you pass out. I have to avoid potatoes, corn, peas, all high starch stuff. I've been fortunate not to pass out yet but I avoid my trigger foods whenever I can and if I accidentally go over my threshhold, I can recogize the symtoms. I pop a couple of gycine tablets in my mouth, wait about 10 minutes, and I feel fine. My sugar has been as low as ~43.

iT SOUNDS LIKE MAYBE REACTIVE HYPOGLYCEMIA SORT OF.  I NOTICED OF THE MAIN BOARD PEOPLE TALK OF THIS AND I HAVE HAD 2 SIMILAR BOUTS LIKE THAT. IT IS WHEN WE EAT TO HIGH OF CARB OR SUGAR FOOD AND IT PROCESSES SO QUICK THAT OUR PANCREAS DUMPS A LOAD OF INSULIN INTO OUR BODIES AND WE REACT.  WHEN I HAD THESE MY FEET FELT NUMB AND I GOT SHAKY...ATE SPOON OF PEANUT BUTTER AND DRANK MILK OR PROTEIN DRINK AND FELT BETTER IN ABOUT 15-30 MINUTES.  IT WAS A CRAPPY EXPERIENCE. HOPE YOU FIND OUT WHAT IT IS...DEB
