Breathtek testing--did I mess up??

I have my pre op testing tomorrow.  I remembered I was not supposed to take pepto bismol before the test but that was the only thing on the list I was worried about.

I have had both knees replaced so I have to take antibiotics 1 hr before dental work.  THe dentist called Monday and said they had rescheduled my cleaning for yesterday.  I took my antibiotics and went.

Then today when I was going over my papers I realized I was not supposed to take antibiotics either.

Even though I am a nurse, I am not familiar with this test.  What is it?  I guess there is still time to get it done before the surgery if they won't do it tomorrow.

Thanks, Terry

This is a simple test in which you drink a fluid and then breath into a plastic bag. The test is checking to see if the bacteria that may cause stomach ulcers is present. I would suggest you call your Dr about whether to reschedule the test or not. Good luck to you.

Terry, I think this is the one that test for H pylori.  You will breathe into a blue bag, and the nurse will cap it.  Then they will give you a lemon lime solution to drink, they'll do some other tests, and then you get to blow up a pretty pink bag and the bags go off to the lab.  I don't know if your antibiotics will affect it - just tell them when you see the nurse.  The great part is that for this and the blood work, you get to sit in a nice blue recliner.

I am not sure about the antibiotics, but I wasn't told not to take my medicines the morning of the test and I took Glucophage.  The vampire told me that they couldn't do the breath test and would have to check for H-Pylori through the blood.  So hopefully the same will happen for you.  If you aren't sure and don't want to waste a trip to St. V, then you might want to call and talk to someone in the lab.  Good luck!

Terry,
The guy that drew my blood for pre-op asked a few questions and decided not to do that test becaus I had taken a Zpak within 2 weeks of surgery.  SO...he just draws the blood and they can test it that way..

Don't Fret :-)
