From my studying on WLS message boards, I understand that diarhrrea following surgery is common - liquid in, liquid out.  However, my bowels resumed moving on Saturday following surgery on Tuesday.  The fecal matter was not loose at all.  However, the color was dark - it appears green.  I've continued to have a similar movement each day.  This afternoon, I felt what appeared to be a gas pain and it was immediately followed by explosive liquid diarhrrea.  Again, it is is dark green, nearly black, and has a terribly foul odor.  I know the odor may be very foul as I would be going through ketosis.  It is the color that concerns me.   Is it possible that it is colored due to all the medications and vitamins I am taking, or is something else going on?  I'm a little nauseous, but in no pain.

Sorry that this is so graphic!  Help!

PS - it's now gotten a yellowy green color....  about like this:  SEE THIS??

Oh Lordy - forgive me for the graphics!!

It's been a long time since I had surgery but I do remember it being gross. For safety sake, I would call my doctor. Jana

After my initial RNY, I was so constipated, it wasn't funny. About the time that got worked out on how to take care of it, the intestinal crap started and brought on diarrhea!

As to color...hmmmm....I've been seeing that particular shade recently myself! I've been chalking it up to my protein drinks.

Usually, the tell-tale sign of ketosis is a foul taste in your mouth (I don't recall it being the culprit for the whew! bm's). If that happens, contact your nut but they'll probably tell you to drink either gatorade (yuck!) or Welch's light grape juice for a few days.

Your body has some things to get use to...vitamins & protein. Until it does, you are going to be experiencing several 'hmmm...imagine that!' moments. Your BM's are not the same as they were pre-op because what you are putting in your mouth is not the same. Only goes to reason that if what you put in is different, what you get out will be too. Has your noisy tummy started yet? Mine was pretty quiet at first..it sure isn't now!

We do get pretty TMI's here sometimes, don't we? LOL!

Sage green USED to be my favorite color...until it became the color I now associate with BMs.

Your new diet along with the vitamins will give your "output" a new hue.  In fact, changing vitamin brands may change your colors also.  I had bright green for a while when I was taking a green iron tablet.

As far as the solid/liquid issue, that will straighten itself out with the more normal your diet becomes.

Ladies, thanks so much for your input on my output!  LOL  Seriously, I suspected that the color probably had something to do with the vitamins and medications I take - yellow, red, purple, pink, no wonder.  And yes, Sherri, I have started noticing a noisy tummy!

Dr. E's office must not be too concerned - I never got a return e-mail from the nurse.  I imagine she'll contact me tomorrow.

I took a little nap late this afternoon, and woke up feeling a little better.  Put me behind on everything, but it was worth it to stop and rest a bit.
