What are you scared of? My thinking was that the operation was a lot less dangerous than staying morbidly obese.  Are you afraid of the surgery, or the lifestyle change, or what? I'm not gonna tell you it's easy, but I AM gonna tell you it's worth it!

Oh..if only there could be a blanket answer to your question..but there isn't.

I saw where you are diabetic in your other post. RNY is terrific at taking that away. Pretty fantastic, huh? Some people, like me, ends up being hypoglycemic..which just means that I avoid starches..that aren't good for me anyway...and I keep glucose tablets in my purse just in case. That, I can deal with.

I also saw that you have PCOS. RNY and losing the weight helped to alleviate those issues for me. Get rid of them completely? No...but to make them where they aren't an issue for me, yes.

Having WLS surgery is a big decision. Afterall, by the time we get to this point, we are obese and not in the best of health. We have all of these extra pounds causing all of these intense physical issues. At this point, for many, ANY surgery would be a risk. For myself, I decided that if I was going to have to have a surgery, it was going to be one to help make all of these other problems not be so much of a problem anymore.

Does WLS have risks? You betcha! So does any other surgery..but so does not having the surgery at all. So...I guess what I'm saying is that only you can decide if it is a risk you want to take. Am I going to tell you that you are going to have your RNY and sail through it without a complication at all? Heck no! Read my profile! I would be the absolute last person in the world to make that statement to anyone. B U T.....for all I have been through...and am still going through...it was the absolute best decision I could have made FOR ME. We each have to make that decision for ourselves though. I would talk with your surgeon, your pcp, your family...and your clergy. Not doing anything at all really should not be an option. If you choose it, you WILL die early from the effects of the obesity and have a less than full life in the process.

Best of luck. I know it's a difficult decision to make. It is one that I have never regretted though...

I thought I was in the clear, and then about 18 months after surgery, I had a perforated ulcer (I hadn't known I'd had an ulcer at all, until it opened and hurt like hell.) I had to have a surgery to repair it. Would I do it again though? The RNY? Yup. In a heart beat. Pre-op, I was hugging 300 pounds. I was hypertensive, and a heartbeat away from diabetes. It was definately worth the risks.
