Question about Soup
I would really wait and hear what your NUT says. You are pretty early out and tomato based stuff can be hard on a new pouch. I know several people on this board got ulcers from tomato sauces. If I'm not mistaken, tomato soup is pretty sweet too. I'd really watch that one and be careful.
I had bean soup during my early days and it is still one of my favorite things to eat.
Hope this helps. I know the early days are the hardest. You'll make it though!

Jacqui

tomato has alot of acid in it too. It can be hard on your pouch line to heal. I don't know if you could eat 4 crackers even. I can only eat about 5 now if they are wheat crackers. Just take it easy and go slow when you start trying them. I was thinking that they wanted us to wait longer for solids because of the "seamline" where they closed off your pouch.
Your NUT is the best bet. I do know you can have broth.
Good luck

I think it would be okay if you dilute it with milk or water. However, it's good that you called your nutritionist to make sure. They're the experts.
Good luck!

Sheila,
I would definately hold off on anything tomato based. I had 2 ulcers early out. One was from caffiene and the other from Ketup. I switched to light mayo to help food slide down after that. And I think I was about 3-4 months out & it was on my list of 'ok to do' for that time. That goes to show that all pouches are not created equal. After that experience, I was ~a year post-op before I was willing to try anything tomato based again.
In the hospital, they gave me creamed soups. When I got home, I used cream soups like gravy on my instant mashed potatoes. My favorite soup early out was broccolli cheddar. I know creamed soups generally have more fat & calories than broth based ones do. Just avoid heavy starches (potatos, corn) in it. If you make your own soup, Swanson has a chicken broth that has 4 g of protein per serving in it. That was the highest protein containing broth I have found so far.
Crackers is something that kinda does a now you see it, now you don't on the allowable lists. It wasn't on the St. V's list for the first 6 weeks when I had my RNY, but was when I had my revision 6 months later. I think they are off of it again. If you are just REALLY in the mood for crackers, try making your own: On parchment paper, make 1-2" mounds of shredded cheese (use the low fat cheese). Bake at 350 for 15 minutes. Allow to cool completely. Cheese is definately on your allowed list. I would make these & spread some refried beans on them, top with a little bit of shredded cheese & nuke just long enough for the cheese on top to start to melt. I felt like I was having a mini taco.
bon apetite'!

My favorite early on was egg drop soup. Either take out or make your own. Bring chicken broth to a slow boil, stir up an egg and drop by teaspoon into the boiling broth. Easy, fast, yummy, and sure makes a grouchy pouch feel warm and full.
