Help!!

I am trying to follow the special diet for the day before surgery as shown in the book we got at pre op class.

I am a Diet Coke addict....   big time.    At 2 am, I woke up and had an icy cold can of diet coke.  Geez - what was I thinking???  However, that is more than 24 hours before surgery, so should be ok, right?  Please???

I promise to have no more....

Then I bought Ginger Ale yesterday as the yellow sheets say we can have that the day before - it is on the list for clear liquid dinner.  I had one can at 10 am.  Then I realize that it is not DIET but Regular!!  OMG - am I out to mess myself up or what????

I double checked, and the juicy juice I bought for tonight is no sugar added - whew.  However, I am drinking plain water now so there's no more chance of messing up.  I even stopped myself before putting Crystal Light in it.

Dr. E's office called to remind me of surgery tomorrow at 11, and to be there by 9.  She confirmed that diet coke is a no no today, as is regular ginger ale.  Crap.  I didn't tell her I had a can of each - but as I said, the diet coke was at 2 AM - 33 hours prior to surgery, so I don't think that's going to even count.

One can of ginger ale shouldn't hurt, should it?  Am I worrying too much needlessly?

I had oatmeal and toast for breakfast, which are foods specifically mentioned for this morning's light breakfast, and I plan to have mashed potatoes and maybe some yogurt for lunch here in a bit.

Can I just flush out the ginger ale by drinking plenty of water?    I promise to behave the rest of the day and think before I eat or drink!!!  I already am very aware that I can't have anything after midnight, and I reviewed my medication list to make sure I don't take anything tomorrow that I shouldn't...  I'm trying really hard to be good!!

Hope someone else responds, but I don't think that mashed potatoes fall under the full liquid diet you are to have for lunch. I'm sure you'll be fine though.

Funny enough, mashed potatoes are one of the items listed under acceptable foods for a full liquid lunch in the book we got at the pre op class - it even mentions ice cream as acceptable!

it says under A full liquid lunch:  :"foods acceptable include:  pudding, custard, cream soups, ice cream, hot cereals, mashed potatoes, applesauce and yogurt"

Clear liquids are for dinner tonight.  Unfortunately, margaritas are not listed under full liquids or clear liquids... LOL  Thanks for your response Melissa.

Well that's good. I am a nurse and mashed potatoes has never been considered a full liquid food. I'd so go for the ice cream while you can!

Yep, margaritas, probably not a great idea. But would be nice wouldn't it?

You know, I wondered about the mashed potatoes too - maybe they're supposed to be really soupy, y'think?  It's listed as ok on page 3 of the yellow sheets.

I don't know what to tell you either..... I had to do clear liquids 2 full days prior to surgery.  And drink this Fleet soda crap... just thinking of the taste of that stuff make me gag.
I feel your pain with the margaritas....
Blessings to you all, Leah

It goes to show you, how Clarian and St. V's differ. I was on CLEAR liquids for 3 days before surgery. Nothing but Broth and clear jello and water for 3 days. Nothing by mouth after midnight the day of surgery and my surgery wasn't until 4. Drink lots of water. I wish they would have had you atrt earlier though, It took me 2 days to get off the head hunger and I had quick drinking pop a month before. You really don't want to be having to go through that withdrawl during recovery, It will be bad enough!!!!! see ya tommorrow!

I am so grateful that I did not have to drink anything nasty or do any bowel prep.

Clear liquids for 3 days?  I would die.  I think after surgery it will be easier.  For the first few days, I'll be too miserable anyway to worry about it too much (I hope).

I just got the precertification letter in the mail from my insurance - it appears that they are only approving my hospital stay through Wednesday.  It says start date is 12/9 and end date is 12/10.

Christie,

I had my surgery in Oct @ St. V's with Dr. Huse, I was a bad girl and had a diet pepsi the day before surgery, I was a terrible addict.  I was fine, but I will say this, You will probably go through terrible caffiene withdrawls at the hospital.  My head hurt so bad from the caffeine withdrawl, it was worse than the actual stomach pain.

Good Luck Girlie! We'll be praying for ya!
