Meat Intolerance

All of a sudden meat (beef, chicken, pork and poultry) seem to make me sick. I'm 6 1/2 months post-op, and I seemed to have stopped losing weight and even gained a pound or two. I've been following the diet and exercising , so should I be concerned?

Thanks

Have you tried drinking Welch's grape juice?  I am a month out and started getting sick over everything.  The nutritionist said it was ketosis and to drink the juice for three days straight or whenever I felt sick.  It really helped.  Even the smell of food was making me sick.

Sorry, I don't know about the weight gain but I have heard that you can hit plateaus and not lose anything and that weight can fluctuate.  Maybe you are just going through a phase and it will start to drop off again.

Lady_J_2008,

Glad to hear that your food intolerance/sensitivity to smell was just ketosis.  I remembered the symptoms sounded so much like mine were.  I love it when there's such a simple solution to such an aggravating problem!   Who knew grape juice could make such a difference??

Thanks I will try the juice and see if that helps. I know about the plateaus I've hit several but this seems to have almost stopped or down to a slow slow crawl.

Thanks for the advice, Angel

If you're doing what you know you should be doing, you'll start to lose again. Plateaus suck, don't they? I still have trouble with meat sometimes, especially if it's too dry. It's weird, seems like some days I tolerate it, and other days I don't. Oh well...just one of those things we have to put up with and learn from, I guess.

Hang in there!

Angel,

How are you doing now? Did the grape juice help you out any? I was bad at going into ketosis my first year or so and had to keep the Welch's light in the house all the time. It really didn't make me not be able to keep meat down..I just had a funky taste in my mouth that no mouthwash could get rid of. Blah!

If you KNOW you are chewing well and yet can't keep foods down, call your surgeon's nurse. A stricture may be forming and they might want to do an endoscopy just to check to be sure all is ok. If it is only meat..try moistening it up a little bit. I usually use ketup or Miracle whip light. It helps it to slide down better. For awhile, I stuck with very lean ham for awhile since it had a higher moisture content.

If you aren't getting in enough calories, your body will go into starvation mode and not allow you to lose any pounds. So be sure you are getting in enough to eat. I know. Sounds strange to tell some who had WLS to lose weight to get ENOUGH food in, huh? I prefer SparkPeople.com to track calories although there are alot of free programs online that can help you with this. Ask your nut, but it will probably be recommended for you to get in 1000-1200 calories per day (+100 g carbs with +30 g of it being fiber and less than 30 g fat). Be sure to also target AT LEAST 64 oz of 'water' ('water': decaf, no carbonation, low/no calorie). I had heard you should drink half of your body weight...so a 200 lb person should get in ~100 oz. Some people count their protein drinks toward their water. I don't..and was told not to by my nut 4 yrs ago..because 120 cal is not exactly 'low cal'. I drink alot of plain old water, but I also drink Fuse slenderize drinks and decaf ice tea. I'm +4 yr out and still cannot handle (nor do I want to) any carbonated beverages.

Keep in touch!
