walking during the middle of the night too??????
While in the hospital I was up every 2 hours to walk around the clock. When I went home I did this for a few more nights but after 1 week out I only get up once to use the restroom and take pain meds and I would walk around my house for a few minutes. It's all to help prevent blood clots.
Good luck!

Yep! sad to say but it is true! :o) when I had mine at St. V's...they told me that they would probably get me up every 2 hours to walk....well that was fine and dandy...untill I found out I got the heaves from the moraphine drip.....ugh! I would get half way around and then heave so bad i could barely make it back to my room.......after several trips of this I was exhausted.......I fianlly got to sleep really good and then they came to wake me up again......I guess from the drugs I got a little cranky...ok..downright crabby/nasty...lol I told the one aide who came in to wake me that they told me in class that if I got a rough nurse they would wake me up and if not I might be lucky to get in 4 hours of sleep. lol Well.....the aide told the nurse on duty what I said and she came in and I told her about the heaves and that I was exhaused and really needed to sleep...she said if i promised to walk good the next trip she would let me sleep and get me switched to oral pain meds......she let me sleep and I was in great shape for my next walk! :o) There was only one nurse who I ruffled with (this one) and suprisingly she had been a gastric patient too! All in all St. V's was wonderful and when they get you up...it is for your own good. I walked alot at night on a path the length of our tiny home just to keep healthy and do as they told me to.
Good luck on your upcoming journey!
Hugs!

At St. V's it is EVERY two hours... day or night. They have the lap board up so you can mark it when you make a trip around. I actually found it to be fun and competitive. Im twisted like that I guess. They don't make you walk any certain distance but they do have butterflies hanging from the ceiling so you can keep track of your progress that way too.
I felt better with every time I got out to walk. I hope you find it that way too.
Attitude is half the battle, make up your mind that it will be fun and challenge yourself to do better each time you walk. Distance and speed is not important. Just get moving... it's for your own good. Blood clots can kill you.
Good luck, Tracy

When I had my surgery, they didn't get my up every 2 hours at night. The nurse said I had walked plenty during the day and evening -- so she let me get some good sleep. I think I got up once or twice at night to walk -- probably when I woke to go to the bathroom or when the did vitals.

Yep, the more walking the better. I had mine on Monday and as of right now, I have walked 5 miles in laps around the floor (theres that fun competitiveness). I feel so much better when I am up and walking than when I am just laying in the hospital bed.
And yes, the nurses wake you up every two hours to walk. But its good for you, and the hospital beds are not very comfortable so its not like I was ever in a deep sleep.
There are basically two things to remember: WALK, WALK, and Walk some more AND
SIP, SIP, SIP and SIP some more on your water or juice.

Jeanna, I walked every two hours after surgery even during the night. I got myself up and walked didn't wait on the nurses. I also found out I walked several time during the evening and late night one I was home because it helped with any discomfort I had. Between my husband and my Mom someone was "walking the hood" with me.
Pain meds weren't my friend and to be honest when I walked I didn't need them. I have a full bottle of pills and didn't take any.
