Hypoglycemia episodes

Has anyone experienced periods of hypoglycemia after WLS?

Right after my surgery my bG levels were high enough to get 3 units of regular insulin a couple of times.   Prior to surgery my fasting bG level & A1C were not high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes but they were a little higher than the "normal" bG values of 74-106mg/dL.

Today my bG reading was 67mg/dL & 71mg/dL.  I treated the symptoms by drinking juice until my bG reading came up to 156mg/dL & then stablized at 98mg/dL which is in the normal range.

Did the hypoglycemia get better as you moved into adding more foods to your diet despite no sugar or little sugar being in your diet after WLS?

bG = blood glucose aka "blood sugar"
mg/dL = milligrams per deciliter

Remember that it doesn't have to be 'sugar' to be an issue. Starches break down into sugars as well. I'm hypoglycemic. I have not had 'sugar' since my RNY in 2004. It is starches that I have to be careful of. Right now, I'm getting abit of a relief from it because of my intestinal stuff but before that, one sliver of potato in veggie soup was enough to cause it to plummet. Mine has gotten as low as 44!

I do not do juice to bring it back up. Why add that sugar & calories? I keep glucose tablets on me. They bring my levels back up & they don't cause me to dump. Be sure to let your pcp/endocrinologist know that you are having these issues. Also let your WLS dieticians know. They can help you avoid the foods that cause this.
