How long should I hurt?

I had surgery on Tuesday and I am still real sore and hurt.    I don't think it is gas, that hasn't been a problem.  I hear stories of people that never really have pain...but I hurt.   What is normal?

It's hard to get up out of bed and from sitting.

You had a major surgery. To hurt, is normal. I was on my pain meds for ~ a week. Ater that, I kept tylenol on hand for a few more weeks. If you have a drainage tube in still, you will find that you will feel ALOT better once it is removed. Some people are fortunate enough not to have any pain. I think they are the minority though.

Keep taking your pain meds. It is easier to keep the pain under control than to try to get it under control. As you can, reduce your dosage slowly.

If you are able to get out of bed or sleep comfortably in bed at this stage, you are already doing far better than I did. I was sleeping in my recliner for about a month.

If at any point you are in doubt of if what you are feeling is normal or not, feel free to call your doctor's office and ask them..ok?

congrats on being post-op!

Sherri,
Thanks for the response... I don't have a drain, so I guess I am lucky in that way.  I am sleeping in bed...I just hate the pain meds I quess.

I was in pain for about a week....went back to work at 10 days out and I was fine. 2 weeks I was pretty much back to normal. I didn't have drain tubes either and pain medicine makes me feel sick, so I was just on regular tylenol about 3 days out form there on. I actually had to stay an extra day in the hospital because the pain med. was making me sick. You will feel better in no time. Good Luck shanna

I was in pain for about two weeks, a lil longer than most probably becasue I did a lot of throwing up in the hospital due to the pain med.   When I came home I took only tylenol because I didn't want to take any narcotics due to the reaction in the hospital. At about a month out I felt fairly "normal" again.  At two months out I felt good.  Hang in there it does get a lot better.

I also wanted to add that I was still wearing my binder for about ten days, so you may wanna keep wearing it for awhile if you are not.

I never took pain meds after I got home, but the pain from the spot where the "big instruments" went in and out was really bad and it lasted like two weeks. I had some build up of fluids and tissue under it and had to go back into my surgeon's office to have him open it up a little, so that started the pain all over again!  It is all soooo worth it though. Like childbirth....you're only going to remember how quickly it all went by once you're through it. Hang in there.
