I've read on here where some people have been taken off there diabettes meds after Surgery!
Just wonder how the med thing has gone for some of you. I know my Metformin pills are to big to take, And my Actos is 45MG There small but potent at 45MG. And my Verapamil for high BP is to big.
So just wondering what some of your stories are!
I've been on these thing's for awhile now so just thought I wouild see what some of you have experienced!
Thanks Rick

The large Metformin pills you are taking are most likely the controlled release kind.  We can't have those.  I was switched to the regulars which are about like an aspirin but thicker.  I cut it in half  just to be CERTAIN I got it down.
I was also on Amaryl.  I was taken off that before leaving the hospital.  Amaryl tends to cause Low blood sugar reactions.  Metformin should not.

Before surgery I took 2000mg (4tabs) of those big Metformin and 2 Amaryl (2mg) a day.

Now, I take my blood sugars and if I am over 120 (after meal or fasting) I take 1/2tab  of the little metformins (same mg as big just not controlled release).  I NEVER take more than one metformin a day.  If I do then my blood sugars run in the 70s and I don't feel well that low.

I usually have to take Metformin about 3 times a week now.  I'm hoping I can eventually get rid of it all.  I just don't like my blood sugar over 120.

Some of your meds you can switch to liquids.  If they are not available in liquids than you can either cut them up or crush them.  They should help you figure all of that out before you go home.

Rick,

Prior to surgery I was taking 3 different meds for my diabetes.  I can't even remember what they were at this monent.  I was given 2 shots of insulin in the hospital.  I haven't had any other diabetes meds since then.  My A1C is running 5.3.

I took 87 units of lantus and 15 units of byetta 2x daily
prandin and actos and lispornil and metformin 500 mg x 3 daily.
After surgery i was given a shot once a day when ever my sugars where up.My sugars have not been high enough since to require a shot.
Now i only take the metformin once a day and my sugars run 85-120
unless im angry and stressed and then they get alittle higher.
Its the best thing i have ever done for myself the surgery has saved my life,i still have a little neuropathy from diabetes but its no way near the way it was..
Good luck

I had Type II Diabetes, controlled with Actos.  I went home on nothing for my sugar, and have not needed a pill since surgery.   I am 3 years out, and my A1C runs around 5.4!!  Oh Happy Days!!
