WILLIAMS SYNDROME:

Physical Traits:
Many children with Williams Syndrome (WS) are said to have similar "elfin" facial features. They generally have a small, upturned nose with a low bridge, long upper lip length, wide mouth, full lips, small chin and puffiness around the eyes. Children with blue or green eyes may have a prominent "starburst," a white lacy pattern, on their iris. These facial features become more apparent with age. Individuals with WS are also of a slightly smaller-than-average stature.

Individuals with WS may suffer from physical problems, specifically heart or blood vessel problems. They typically have a narrowing in the aorta or pulmonary arteries, which can cause conditions such as supravalvular aortic stenosis. For this reason, it is necessary to keep an ongoing status of cardiac health. Young children with WS may also have hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels), which causes extreme irritability. The condition usually resolves itself during childhood, but in some cases, dietary or medical treatment may be needed.

Oh, honey, my heart goes out to you and your family.  The road to dealing with a special needs child is indeed a long one.  I teach deaf and deaf-blind children.  The first thing you all need to deal with is guilt.   Jolynn's mom is going to feel terribly guilty...was it that glass of beer or wine I had before I knew I was pregnant.  Was it the amount of sweets I ate while I was carrying her?   You first need to reassure her, that all the tests are not in yet, and when they are in, if the diagnosis shows that she has a child with special needs, then you need to reassure her that God had a special needs child and He knew that with her loving heart and your families' spirit that He could safely send her to you all to be cared for.  Then the next call you make is to your local school system and ask to speak to the director of special education.  That new baby qualifies under state law to receive special education services from birth to age 3.  The program is called First Steps.  The people who will be involved in Jolynn's life are professionals and they will be a tremendous help.  Good luck, God Bless, keep us informed.  Hugs to you all...Karen

In my prayers!!! Melissa's triplets were born with issues.. We were afraid and praying for months..So far the only horrible issue left is Alexa's ashema & allergies. The girls are still small..but growing. Being a grandma is a contstant prayer anyway.. You are right to turn her over to God... no one can raise her better!! Speaking of first steps my girls had firssteps come out to the house for the first 3 years.. they loved their coaches..

I am saying prayers for the little sweetheart and also for her parents and you. It is difficult knowing that things may not be as you dreamed them to be. But know that God has a great plan for that little bundle of joy and her family plays a big part of that great plan. Know that nothing happens in God's world by mistake and He knew that she needed a family that would be there to help her through life's hurdles and that says a lot of wonderful things for you and your family. God has great faith in all of you.

I know the dreams that you have for your grands since I am going to have my first one in April. I do know the dreams since I am having them already. Just because a stumbling block may happen doesn't mean that you can't find the way around them. Just keep the faith and know that God will take care of all of you.

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter
that tells what kind of life you have lived.
