my second day home

It is Saturday morning; just about 3 days after my surgery. I think that I am doing pretty good, but my back hurts quite a bit. I got home yesterday. I haven't ventured outside yet, but I have gotten up and walked here in the house every few hours. I am having trouble drinking just straigh****er in any great amounts, but I am eating ice, drinking some juices, and those SF popsicles are the best!!! I sure do pee a lot, so I guess that is a good sign, and I did go "#2" for the first time this morning. I had some broth yesterday, and a little jello. Before I left the hospital, I was given some banana pudding and some yogurt. Today, I hope to do a little more eating than I did yesterday. I can get up out of the recliner by myself, do the stairs, and generally get around. Does this sound like where I should be by this morning??? I plan on posting a more detailed account of my surgery experience on my home page blog in the next few days. There were good parts and some bad points. I was never the least bit sick at my stomach at any time, nor did I have the trapped gas in the left shoulder that people talk about. I was also totally awake by 11:30 that day, and just took a few capnaps. I remember being in quite a bit of pain in recovery and really not knowing what was going on there. My main disappointment was in the nursing staff, some of whom did not have a clue. I was supposed to get ice chips every hour, and on several occasions had to call several times, and it ran over into two hours. One aide could actually not tell time, I tested her. My main day nurse for Thursday and Friday was more like an eccentric slow librarian type; (no insults to librarians, but you know the stereotype I mean). All in all not the professional type nurses that I have seen when my other family members have been in the hospital.

It sounds like you are doing well.   I walked outside just down 2-3 houses and back for a change of scenery the first couple of days but it is most likely rainy near you.  Did they give you a protein drink to be sipping on????  St. V has us drink sf carnation instant breakfast made with milk and a little dry milk for extra protein. i still can not gulp down drinks almost 2 years later, it hurts a little....so sip sip sip and walk walk walk.  We are all here for you so good luck...hugz

It is so strange how different the doctors are about when to eat or drink what!!!  I have the recipe for the CIB potein drink, but am not supposed to start that until the 4th day.   I am going to try to go out into the yard later on today.

Hi, it sounds like you are doing great for day 3.  If you are having trouble getting plain water down you might try adding some sugar free powders to the water.  That will give it some flavor and may go down a little easier.  I found that I could not drink anything really cold and room temp worked best for me.  The sippy cups were wonderful.  Be careful of juice.  Most of them have a lot of sugar and you don't need that.  Glad you did not have the shoulder pain.  It is very painful.  Glad to hear that you are peeing alot.  They give us so much IV fluids in the hospital that this is pretty common after we come home.  Hang in there.  Pamper yourself and let your body heal.  Sip and walk as much as possible.  Follow all of your doctor's orders.  You will enjoy the CIB shakes.  I know I did.  Hugs.  Karen
