I saw an ad for a yogurt maker and wondered how easy it is to make your own.  Has anyone tried it?

I picked up an ice cream.yogurt maker today for 5.00! Brand new from Goodwill :) I made a batch of strawberry peacan protein ice cream. OMG to die 4! I love my OIKos yogurt though from walmart and I add all kinds of yummies to it so I problably won't make yogurt. I HEART OIKOS!

I add my protein powder (body fortress) 1/2 banana and handful pecans. Ohhh so yummy and makes me full for hours! Sf vanilla syrup and other fruits ( just a small amount) adds alot of flavor.BY itself tastes like sour cream :)

I've tried it once.  It tasted ok, but was a little thin (I forgot to add the powdered milk that was recommended if you use skim milk to make it with).  It is a long process, but most of the time is taken up with it just sitting on a heating pad.  You can look it up on line and find a couple of good instruction sets.  Good luck if you try it.

Thanks Cindy!   I went to the library this morning and got a book on making it.  One of the guys asked me if I wanted a crockpot recipe.....l said sure.  He gave me the recipe and it looks so easy.  You're right, it takes a long time to sit.....6-8 hours!
Thanks again

Could you send me the crockpot recipe?  I'd like to try it.  It might work out a little better than the one I tried before.

Thanks

Cindy,
I tried this recipe without the gelatin and it was a little runny, but it tasted sooo goood.  I only used 3 TBS of yogurt as a starter and then put a little (1tsp) vanilla .

1 gal milk
1/4 cup of dry milk
2 T unflavored gelatin
8 oz plain yogurt (with live and active cultures)
Mix dry milk and gelatin together and add 2 cups of milk.  Stir and let sit to dissolve.  Pour rest of milk in stockpot and heat on low to medium heat until milk reaches 190 degrees. Make sure to stir milk constantly.  Part way through the heating process add the dry milk mixture.  Stir until dissolved.  When milk reaches 190 degrees, turn crockpot on low.  Take pot off of stove and cool the mil****il it reaches 110 degrees.  You can put pot in sinkful of ice water to do this quickly.  Stir occasionally so there isn't any scum.  Once it reaches 110 degrees pour into crockpot and add the plain yogurt.  STir until smooth.  TURN CROCKPOT OFF. Put lid on and leave for 6-8 hours.  Yogurt gets tarter the longer it sits.  When done, stir with a whis****il smooth and transfer to a resealable container.

Good Luck!!
