Make sure that you watch the sugars and carbs in the protein bars and stuff. Make sure he doesn't take things to an unhealthy level. My little brother was about his age when he started with his eating disorder tendencies and was full blown bulemic by time he was 19 or so requiring hospitalization. Most people don't think that boys do that.

When I started personal training in fall 2006, the trainer recommended 100-110g protein per day. I would bet he could do well with atleast that much. Good luck, with it all.

PS. GOod to see you!

PPS. When I went to baritric buddy training, Linda Rodriguez said they are now recommending 75-90 g protein per day for post-ops.

Kathy,

Be careful of those protein bars. Some of them are packed with calories! I would rcommend your encouraging your son to get on SparkPeople.com and to log everything he eats, drinks, and exercise. This will really assist with portion control. For anyone, the secrets to weight loss success is PEW (Protein, Exercise, Water) and making life changes. Figuring out how to get the two to work together can be the hard part. One thing we all know too well is that DIETS DON'T WORK. With PEW, you have to make it part of your lifestyle, or it won't last...it will be a 'diet'.

P: Since your son has a normal stomach and normal insides, he needs protein from food sources. If he doesn't like fish, then chicken & turkey are also high in protein. Grilled/baked & skinless, it is a wonderful protein source. Lean cuts of pork (like pork roast..not bacon) can also be an excellent alternative. Beef tends to be high in fat so I would limit how many times per week he has beef. Encourage your son to drink skim milk and eat fat-free cottage cheese. Keep low fat string cheese in the house for munching. Eggs are not the culprit that they once were thought of being so boil up some and leave in the fridge in case he wants a quick, filling stack.

E: Your son is really trying to get some exercise in. Not to sound discouraging but I'm afraid that what your son is doing is an exercise diet. A good exercise program is one that a person will stick with. At 351 lbs? Walking would be an excellent place to start! Pick him up a pedometer. He can track his steps on SparkPeople if he sets that as a goal (he can join the Indianapolis spark team..it's a team goal to get 5000 steps per day). With it being summer, swimming is another exercise that is arobic, easy on the joints, and fun. At 14? the exercise he gets in needs to be fun or he's not going to continue it as a lifestyle change.

W: Get rid of the pop in his life! Get rid of the Kool-aid, HI-C, ...all those sugar laden drinks! Encourage him to drink AT LEAST eight 8 oz glasses of water each and every day (also, a team goak on sparkpeople). Try to approach it in that it is ONLY four of the 16 oz bottles...ONLY two of the 32 oz bottles. We have 6-7 bottles in the fridge that are 24 oz..with the pull-top lid. They are easier for me to handle when I'm drinving than having to screw the lid off each time. Anyway, we like the taste of our water at home...cold. So we keep these filled & in the fridge at all time. We don't go to the expence of buying bottle water all the time! This will probably be the hardest one for your son to do...as it was for all of us!

I would REALLY recommend your asking his physician for nutritional advise for him. Ask how many calories he should be getting in per day and still lose weight at a healthy rate. For non-bariatric patients, the losing recommended rate was 2 lb/week. Yes, that seems impossibly slow to us post-ops but think about it, that is 104 lb per year! Within 18 months, your son could be at a normal weight. Ask how much protein a 14 yr old boy should get per day. Ask how many grams of fat is healthy. I was told to keep mine under 30 grams but I know you have to have some in order to be healthy so ask.. Also ask about carbs. You can get too low!

I really commend your son for trying to get on a healthy lifestyle plan! And I commend you for standing by him with it.
