I told my friend I would put a post up for advice for her husband who had his rny two years ago. She is having a real problem with his smells, if you know what I mean. She complains she has to clean the toliet everyday, and the house always smells. She said almost everytime he eats he has to go, and it leaves a mess and stinks something awful. They go on his motorcycle for rides and he passes gas to where she just chokes. He tells her this is the new him and to get use to it. Is this normal? Any help you can give this friend of mine would be so helpful!

Your friend wouldn't want my advice! First no more motorcyle rides! Then you can guess what my other advice would be! It has something to do with kicking him to the curb!

I must qualify my comment.  I am 11 weeks post op today so I am giving and educated guess.  I know we do have more gas post op than we did preop.  But I question if some of the problem is in what he is eating.  I think I would start with logging what he is eating to see if there is a pattern with what he eats and the gas.  That is where I would start as well as with his surgeon and/or dietician.

I really have compassion for your friends situation.  I have read about this happening after surgery and people working in the service industry actually losing their jobs for smelling up the place of business.   I believe the suggested relief was an enzyme available at GNC.  I would most definatly give it a shot.

I would definately talk to the dietician and surgeon. There could be things they recommend to help with this. Sounds positively gross, and I feel lucky I haven't had that 'effect'.

I agree that this is something to be discussed with the nuts. I have heard that different calciums can make the situation worse.

I had the gas issues to a degree post-op and definately the 'cleaning the toilet daily' one every since October. This is where a little bit of decency can go a long, long way. Unless I can't help it, I release my gas in the bathroom with the exhaust on. And I clean my own toilet! It really sound's like her husband is using the surgery as an excuse to be rude...and well, that is not acceptable. I'm sure he thinks it's funny...which just shows that he is an immature, rude, person...and should be treated as such! 'get use to it'? I think not! I think she has alot bigger issue on her hands than his gas/bm's!

I've also taken Devrom and it does work!  Of course it doesn't totally take away the smell but it does reduce it!  You can get it at any pharmacy----cvs has it behind the pharmacy counter.    They don't taste to badly either.

Good luck!

The Devrom mentioned in early posts can help, but this sounds a lot like a dietary issue.  I know for me, if I eat too much sugar or sugar alcohols I will have terrible gas.  As long as I stick to lean proteins and veggies I don't have a problem.  Not that I never have gas, just not as much and definitely not as smelly!
