Will drinking too many fluids too fast cause you to stretch your pouch? I can't guzzle a whole cup of anything straight down, but I can drink like 24oz, rather quickly, or so it seems. Just wondering.

I just fill up faster...I can drink pretty fast too but always my tummy seems to say.. opps to much...Honestly I think my drain hole is stretched... I asked Dr C to put a stitch in it to keep things in the tummy a little longer but I think the stitch stretched.. even food seems to go thru pretty fast.Linda Kay

Christie...I think of the pouch & stoma like a funnel. When you first have surgery, you have to sip..and learn at what speed you can pour liquid into it. If you go too fast at first, it will gurgle back up & out. As you get further along though, you master the art of pouring the liquid...and find that you can pour it in quicker & quicker. As to stretching it though, the true test with the size of the pouch, I think, is to try to eat protein ONLY with NO liquids, fruit, veggie, or carbs. If you can eat 24 oz, then worry!! I would bet that you can only do half of that or less. 8-12 oz is about normal for those of us further out. Now..I have heard that carbonated liquids can stretch a pouch though so I would avoid them.    Sherri
