Liver Reduction Diet Ideas

I was told by my Dr. that I have to lose 20 lbs before surgery. The Nut puts all of her patients on the Liver Reduction Diet. Only thing you can have is lean meats and veggies. I miss my carbohydrates but they got me in trouble to start with. So far I have lost 8-10 of the 20. I hope to have it all lost by May 1st so they will submit me for approval.  Any coping strategies or creative meal ideas from anyone? Weekends are hard for me and not to mention one of the DS friends just came in with a box of cookies.........I sent them off to soccer for the boys to eat!!!

Michele, Welcome to the board. I didn't have to lose any prior to surgery....although I did lose a few lbs. What I did to help me deal with not being able to have my favorites anymore was that I kinda had a 'funeral' of sorts for each of them. During the two weeks prior to my surgery, I would have lunch at one of my favorite fast food places..and order my 'usual'. I went alone, and I ate in my truck...which was a norm for me anyway. While I would eat that meal, I would talk to the food and explain to it why I could not have it anymore. By the end of the meal, I really did not want it anymore. Just recently, at 3.5 years post-op, I have been struggling to keep my weight on (I know...very different concept!) so I had my daughter go to Rally's and get me my old favorite from there...a deep sea double fish sandwich and a large order of their seasoned fries. The sandwich turned my stomach...WAY TOO much grease! And the fries just wasn't as good as my memory made them out to be. I really do think the trick is convincing yourself that the carbs/fats/etc are NOT good for you...and then letting your taste buds get use to food that are good for you. I have to think of food much as I do ciggarettes. I had quit smoking after ~+30 yrs so that I could have the surgery. I was up to 2.5-3 packs a day when I quit. I don't consider myself an 'ex-smoker'...I consider myself a 'NON-Smoker'. The  desire to pick them back up isn't there..no more than it is for that deep sea fish sandwich, a whopper, or any of the other junk food I use to be dumb enough to stuff in my face. I am now a 'NON-Fast Food junkie'. I know. It's a mental game..but it can work! Good luck!  Sherri

I lost quite a bit preop. I just had my surgery and dr. Mattar said my liver was fabulous  (fab'u'lus!). (yes, you have to say it like that, too)  LOl  Anyway, I cut out all bad carbs..anywhite carbs. Poatoes, flour, starches in general. Any sugar POP, I only ate less than 100 grams of carbs per day. The last 3 days I dranks only clear liquids per My doc, well he said 2 days but I am an over achiever what can i say. LOL If you want more details just PM me and I can go over it with you. It wasn't hard after the first couple of weeks. 100 ounces of water per day, also. Shanna
