Post-op thirst

Okay--this may seem weird, but other than the whole "please don't let me die in surgery" and "OH MY GOD a roomful of surgery staff are going to see my huge naked body laying unconscious on a operating table!" issues--the only other thing I am really worried about is being thirsty.  I know head hunger and food issues will creep up/race up after surgert but, I keep hearing how you have to sip, sip, sip after surgery and that is great, but sometimes I am SO thirsty and I just gulp down a couple glasses of water and I know I won't be able to do that after surgery. How many people have a problem with being thirsty and not being able to drink water quickly enough to satisfy the thirst after surgery??  Today I have been trying to just sip sip sip to get used to it and it is driving me NUTS!!  I drink over 100 ounces of water a day now.

Maddie I totally understand where you are coming from. I was the same way. I was worried that I might not be able to sip sip sip...well after surgery I found I had no appetite for food and really did not feel thirst either. Even now I find I go a long time without drinking and then think...gee..I am really behind and force myselt to drink. When your pouch is little you will fill up really easy/quickly. If you drink and not sip it will hurt enough that you will remember to sip the next time! lol Just think of after surgery being like starting all over again with food and drink. You will rediscover new taste buds you didn't even know you had. That is why it is so important during recovery to retrain youself to your new eating/drinking habits. Even today I see someone tip up a glass or bottle and gulp and I am amazed.  lol I can take about 3 to 4 swallows at 18 months out at one time but that is my limit. Everyone is different. Just look forward to a changed life and greet it with a positive attitude and you will be fine! Hugs! Marianne

Don't worry about it.  After surgery you won't want to drink fast. You can't drink fast. If you do you will know and pay dearly. It hurts. thirst will be a good thing, just sip, sip, sip all day long.  You just have to keep that in mind.  With all this thirst have you been checked for diabetes?

Actually I am diabetic so I know that at least some of my thirst comes from that, but I have always been a "big" drinker even as a child.  Probably what terrifies me is during the group consultation, Dr, Cacucci mentioned a WLS patient who drank a bunch of water at once a day or two after surgery and ripped open her pou*****ision line from it.  I am just scared that I will do that!

Fortunately, I don't drink any carbonated beverages (well I might have a Coke once or twice a year)--I primarily drink water and hot tea--I know I will need to switch to decaf tea at least for the first six months or so, but that is not a problem.
