post op food question...
Okay from what i am reading I will be released from the hospital til 4 weeks out on full liquids meaning semi solid or pudding consistency. So I'm just curious since baby food fruits/veggies steps 1/2. Sooo I am just curious I have a friend who makes her own babys food (sweet potatoes and other veggies like squash and stuff) and I was curious if I got the recipes from her and theres no sugar added or whatever would this be okay to do as long as it is pudding consistancy? I can't help but think that making it fresh would be better then buying it in a jar where its sat for months on end.
I made my own foods but you'll find that that 4 weeks goes by fast and you really only eat like 3-4 different things... cottage cheese, sugar free applesauce, string cheese, and mashed potatoes were what i ate during the whole 4 weeks and refried beans... you can't get very adventurous because your pouch just won't tolerate much and it's best those first 4 weeks to just find what does work and stick with that... let the pouch heal up before you start getting tooo adventurous... i joked and said that that was the "Glob of white stuff" time period...
I have to agree with Jessyca, plus don't go out and buy alot of "stuff", you'll end up throwing it out . I ended up unable to eat any leftovers-just didn't agree with my pouch.
My basics were instant potatoes made with low salt chicken broth;sf pudding/jello/ popcycles;cottage cheese & sting cheese applesauce, and inst. plain oatmael. Remember- you are only going to eat SMALL amts. Make sure you get a few sippy cups & baby spoons.I found condiment cups at Wal-Mart, and bought 6 to have on hand- they were in the kitchenware section.
Good luck!!!

I am 2 weeks out and I have had some variety. I have eaten cottage cheese, string cheese, applesauce, instant potatoes, yogurt, cream of wheat, refried beans with a sprinkle of shredded cheese and SF pudding. And of course lots of popcicles. That is how I end the day to attempt to get in all my water. Some days it takes those 6 grams to make a completion of my liquid. I ususally eat 2 at a time. Plus it helps me get through the night. I have found that eating the 1st thing when I get up before drinking has helped get most things done, then I can start drinking 30 minutes after I finish my breakfast. I have not bought any baby food yet. I looked at the sugar grams on the label and they all have a lot of sugar content.
I also wanted to add that I also bought the set of tupperware midgies. They are a container that is marked 1, 1 1/2, and 2 oz size with a lid. My daughter also went to Gordon Food Service and bought the 2 oz disposable container with lids that is great for storing leftovers in the fridge. I made some of the custard receipe that was posted here on this site or the WLSindy site and those containers were great for putting the custard into when it was done. Better than having a large dish in the fridge. I made some sugar free pudding and that dish is still in the fridge because my husband is helping me consume that because he likes pudding and not custard!
Just one note...
Fruits & veggies aren't on the list of
until later for most people for several reasons.
1. You are able to eat so very little bit that you want to be sure that every bite counts..which means, protein, protein, protein.
2. Fruits contain natural sugars and citric acids. At first, you want to avoid both as much as possible. The sugars for obvious reasons, the acids because the can cause ulcers.
3. While veggies are good for you, they have fiber which later on will be very good, but as a new post-op, it's hard for your new pouch to break down into useful vitamins.
So...why mashed potatoes??? Remember, these are to be instant only. Your pouch, again, can't break down the 'real' stuff. Your body needs some carbs. If it doesn't get them, you'll go into ketosis (notable by a nasty taste in your mouth...contact your nut if this occurs).
