Hello everyone    WLs Surgery back in DEC of 04 .  Lost 120lbs reached my goal wt of 120lbs.  Having some bad stomach problems they don't know what it is yet.  Sometimes the pain is so bad I have to take Vicodin.  But anyway My question to you is what kind of vitamins do you think work the best for WLS patients?  I am low on Vitamin A, calcium and low iron.  I just got Vitamin A from Vitalady 10,000 dry what ever.  That is what my doctor at Univeristy of Chicago said to get.  His name is John Alverdy.  He did not do my surgery though.  Had it done in Indiana Dr. Dennis Streeter.  I am looking into plastic surgery now but I cannot do anything until they find out whats going on with this terrible stomach pain.  And the vitamin deficiency.  Any help would be appreciated  Thanks

I take chewable calcium and Flintstone vitamins, along with my B12 shots. I don't know what else to recommend. I know the U. of Chicago is a great hospital though, you're probably in really good hands now. My mom, from Hammond, goes up there for treatment for her Crohn's disease.  Linda Vicory

Susana,

Have you been taking any vitamins since your surgery (prior to going to U of C)?

Most of us here in the Indy area have been directed to take:

3 multi-vitamin chewables (Flintstone, Centrum) per day

One B1 per week One B12 sublingual once or twice a week OR B12 injectables monthly 3 Calcium citrite chewables per day (at least 4 hours after taking the vitamins) Many were also told to add 1 Biotin (300-1000 mcg) daily. I would suggest that you take chewables or liquids whenever possible (except the B12) and to stick to tablets when you can't. Capsules or jel-tabs tend to not break down. For the stomach pain...has it been check into for it to be internal hernia's (aka Kinky Bowel Syndrome)? Often, they will do a cat scan to try to detect it but unless the intestine is kinked at the precise moment of the test, the test won't diagnose it. For mine, it took an exploratory surgery to find it..and then they found more than one. Good luck! Sherri ps..Prior to plastics, you will probably want to be on the upper side of your BMI normal range...otherwise, you will be underweight. Some surgeons will make patients gain and maintain the gain prior to doing the plastics on them.
